Forums > Senate Hall archive > SH Archive/Too many era tags?

I've started noticing pages where the era tags are, I think, being used incorrectly. People seem to be adding "assumed" eras to the list. The latest example I found was Dani, whose entry places her in the Rise of the Empire era and Rebellion era. Now, Dani has made no appearances prior to 0 ABY, and we have no real information about her from before then. Shouldn't this mean she only gets a Rebellion tag, or are we deciding that if someone is old enough, and apparently lived in the era, that era should be included? I mean, who knows? Maybe Dani spontaneously generated shortly before the issue she first appeared... I'm just curious what the policy on this is. --JMM 17:14, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Our current "policy," which I don't think is official, is to only use the tags for eras in which they actually appear. —Xwing328(Talk) 18:48, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
    • I tend to put up whatever era tags the article actually covers. So if they have backstory material taking place in the Rise of the Empire era, I put that tag on. Anyway, do we really think Dani didn't live in that era? I'd sooner put the tags on than not. Havac 20:52, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
  • I think part of the problem is that this mixes in-universe biographical data with real world publishing eras. The eras were introduced to indicate at what point of the timeline a story (book, comic) takes place, so many users (including me) use the era symbols more like a list of the eras of the books, comics, etc in which the characters appear, and not to show at what parts of the timeline the character existed. --Craven 22:25, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
    • I usually follow Havac's perspective- if a character is mentioned as having backstory in one era, I give them the tag, but only if it's mentioned. So I wouldn't give rebellion era to K'Kruhk, because AFAIK his backstory isn't detailed in that era by his appearances. Atarumaster88 Jedi Order (Talk page) 14:06, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

        • I pretty much put in what I feel makes sense, usually from an IU perspective per Havac; if they lived in that era, they get the tag. Besides, the imp, reb, and new eras tend to be quite fuzzy in their respective definitions.--Goodwood Redstarbird (For the Rebellion!) 01:23, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
