After seeing the various Unidentified (insert title here) articles in the RC list, I was wondering if it was appropriate to create similar articles for unidentified ships featured in various media. I've come across several ships that I feel should have articles, but have held off creating them because they were unidentified.

An example of what I'm talking about: at the end of the RPG sourcebook The Kathol Outback, a Star Destroyer joins in the attack on Danoor alongside the Lialic II. The ship is armed with a new weapon, a devastator torpedo. I feel that there is enough information to warrant an article, which would be named Unidentified Star Destroyer (Danoor).

Would it be appropriate to create such articles or is there a policy already covering this? - Cavalier One(Squadron channel) 23:15, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Dunno about any policy on unidentified ships, but the ol' gut tells me that it's not really worth putting up an article on an otherwise unidentified vessel unless there's some sort of distinguishing characteristic (like the aforementioned "devastator torpedo"). In the above example, is it known what class of Star Destroyer it is? If not, caution is advised.--Goodwood Redstarbird (Alliance Intelligence) 09:26, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
    • Of course, I fully see the problem in allowing such articles about ships that are mentioned in passing and have little revelance to anything, and agree that there should be an issue on having a distinguished characteristic for the article (such as the aforementioned Star Destroyer/ devastator torpedo). But what would be considered as a "distinguished characteristic"? Other examples I have is of an unidentified Carrack-class light cruiser that attacked the FarStar at Tanquilla Beach, and an unidentified assault shuttle that was used as a testing ground for a new biological weapon. Would these be considered as distinguished characteristics? Also, regarding your question, Goodwood, it's only refered to as a Star Destroyer. However, the picture on the front of The Kathol Outback shows an Imperial-class vessel. The Star Destroyer deployed at Danoor is the only Star Destroyer in the book, so it would be logical to assume that it is meant to be that vessel. Furthermore, it was mentioned in an interview with the creators of The DarkStryder Campaign that the Star Destroyer was added to the book at the last minute because of the cover art. - Cavalier One(Squadron channel) 11:30, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
      • I'd be all for the inclusion of unidentified ships as long as they appear in official and canonical sources and all that business... but I'm, of course, a hyperinclusionist. KEJ 18:17, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
      • I agree that distinct designs explored in some form of detail should be given their own article, or if modified, should have their own subsection in an existing article. For instance, I created two articles based on a mention in The Bounty Hunter Wars books of destroyer and heavy cruiser models that were being constructed by Kuat with dedicated projectile weaponry and required storage facilities for their ordnance, something which is not included in most destroyer-models detailed in the fact books. I don't think the ship Cavalier One describes merit's it's own page, since it is the new weapon that is the point of interest. In which case, the devastator torpedo should gain it's own article, and the ship should be mentioned as the "unnamed test ship" for the new weapon. That way, we don't have multiple "Unidentified [insert whatever here]" articles littering the site, and this principle can be used for any other unidentified ship, planet, alien species etc. that has any noteworthy precedent without the specific name being clarified.

Any thoughts? Darth Xadún 13:26, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

I've created a subpage with an example of the kind of page I'm looking to create here. Please excuse the redlinks. Basically, I feel that the information in the article needs to be recorded on the wiki, and the article is longer than some of the named ship articles on the wiki. Thoughts or comments? - Cavalier One(Squadron channel) 23:41, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Any ship, unidentified or not, with that much info deserves an article, IMHO. -- AdmirableAckbar (Talk) 23:45, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
    • Hmmm..... you have pulled together a decent amount of information for this article. But i still say that the most important thing about this ship is the new weapon it carried, and the ship could be mentioned within an article about the devastator torpedo. Although I have a sinking feeling I might be in the minority.....Darth Xadún 09:19, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
  • If there are no objections, I'd like to move the subpage article I created to the main namespace, and clean it up a bit. I feel that it deserves its own article, and it does play a significant role in the RPG adventure it appears in. - Cavalier One(Squadron channel) 18:53, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
    • Sure thing. :) VT-16 12:13, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I would like to think that there should be one page but two articles, so it says: devastator torpedo and star destroyer or such the like. perhaps though you could create additions on already existing articles such as proton torpedos and star destroyer types.
