Would it benefit Wookieepedia if the more important unknown characters would be added to the list of nameless individuals and would receive a proper page that would identify them as being nameless? If it's not the custom, I'm not going to do it, but if you say it's okay, I'm planning to add some unknown characters. One benefit is that at least Wookieepedia will be clear about the name. No name is still so much better than fanon stuff. --Sompeetalay 09:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

  • If there is no objection to add unknown characters, please don't add tags like 'sourceless' or 'conjecture'. Of course they are sourceless! That's why I add them. --Sompeetalay 20:55, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
    • "Conjecture" indicates that the material is real but a proper name or title for the article doesn't exist, forcing the use of a conjectural one. I know, kind of weird, but that's what it means. jSarek 03:24, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
      • I know, but that's not my point when I want to add unknown characters :) I just want to add those characters so that people could see they have no name yet. It'll maybe discourage people to use fanon stuff. And of course it's not always easy to think of a reasonable 'name' for these unknowns. I just want to know if you think it would benefit Wookieepedia or not to have more nameless individuals from the movies.--Sompeetalay 10:18, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
        • In 'RotJ' there are four unknown Rebel Ishi Tib. What would be the best way to incorporate them? Unknown Ishi Tib 1? Unknown Ishi Tib 2? Etc? --Sompeetalay 09:00, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
        • The problem with giving them each their own article is just that. Which one is Ishi Tib 2 and which is 3, etc. The Drifter issue has sort of brought this up, with him being named "Unknown Yavin Rebel pilot". The problem in that case is, there's like 30 unknown pilots in that Yavin briefing room. I don't think we want to end up with people cropping every face from that scene and having "Unknown Rebel pilot #12" and "Unknown Rebel pilot #23". It's just too big a number. Maybe a Gallery of these unnamed people is a better idea, or a gallery that includes notes next to each photo or group of photos? Or maybe a page listing unknown characters, with a separate page for "unknown Yavin pilots" or something. --JMM 13:04, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
          • A gallery would be a good idea, but I haven't got a clue how to do that. I can provide you with pictures if that would be necessary.--Sompeetalay 21:10, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
            • If you've got the images and know what you want, a gallery will be pretty easy to set up. Just let me know. The more specific you are, the better. --Xwing328(Talk) 00:46, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
  • I'm on a lab-top on a plane right now, but when I get back from Orlando, I'll make EVERY unknown being in all my Hutt comics into articles. -- Jabbathehuttgartogg(Rancor pit) Grappa's Tattoo 22:12, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Well perhaps we could also be a bit cautious, by not including every unknown character from the SW universe. I'd say movie characters are more 'needed' because of possible fanon stuff.--Sompeetalay 08:30, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
  • I'm probably just being a pain at this point, but would "Unnamed" be a better way of describing these characters than "Unknown"? Seems more specific to me, or maybe I'm just arguing semantics. Any thoughts? --JMM 14:05, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Well no. I think it's not such a bad idea at all. --Sompeetalay 14:52, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
    • I'm definitely in favor of "unnamed" over "unknown". Havac 17:18, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Yeah, unnamed seems a little more specific than unknown. Green Tentacle (Talk) 20:24, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
      • I'll start moving the ones I created. So I'll clean up my own mess :p At least I'll try, because I get an internal error when I try to change some of them. --Sompeetalay 08:37, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
      • Hmm, the thing is, from an in-universe POV, they're not unnamed, we just don't know their names. So wouldn't "unknown" be more appropriate? jSarek 10:04, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
      • Well, the in-universe aspect of these sort of articles makes things a little difficult. To be honest, if this was some real-world encyclopedia, there probably wouldn't be any articles about "unknown" or "unnamed" people. Either one is an out-of-universe title. I added a number of CCG card characters, and though some of them have no names, we do have details on them so they're not exactly unknown. Although, I suppose in-universe they're not unnamed. We just don't know those names. There may not be any right answer here... --JMM 14:16, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
        • What about "anonymous"? Havac 14:17, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
      • Maybe this should become a Consensus Track issue? --JMM 14:18, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
        • The main point of adding these characters is to avoid fanon articles about these characters. Now it is clear that these guys haven't got a proper name. --Sompeetalay 20:35, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
          • Yes, but people need to find the article to learn that fact. If someone searches for "Dr. Fanon McFanon," they're not going to be redirected to "Unknown Doctor"; they're going to get a blank page to edit. So, really, I don't foresee it helping the fanon problem any more than the gallery. jSarek 03:12, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
  • You are right :) Still I think it's also important to show fans what characters still haven't received a name.--Sompeetalay 08:07, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Yes, JSarek, but if a Wookieepedian knows about the good Dr. McFanon, he or she will create the proper redirect if necessary. Sure, they'll be some fanon stuff from time to time, but it eventually gets dealt with. --JMM 17:58, 17 October 2006 (PDT)
      • Yes, but they could be redirected to the gallery as easily as to an article. jSarek 09:15, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
        • I guess it depends on the character. The recent unnamed articles I've added have been based around characters featured on CCG cards, which all have at least some minimal details about them. Drifter got one just for the sake of the large amount of fans who "think" they know him. The most random, unremarkable background character can still be added to a gallery. Also, could some pictures in the gallery be taken from these "Unnamed" character pages and have a caption that links to their specific pages? That way, people may find them either way. --JMM 18:30, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

I've created the page we've talked about. Any discussion or comments for it can go on its talk page: Gallery of unnamed Rebels. --JMM 12:15, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
