You heard me.
Wookieepedia's become far more than just a fan encyclopedia. I've been toying with the idea of suggesting an official blog for awhile, and the new interviews-thing kind of cemented the need in my mind. It'd also be nice to have a avenue to disseminate general announcements and the like that isn't the top of the wiki.
I'm imagining a blog covering a variety of topics, including--
- Wookieepedia news and announcements, obviously: FAs, Wookieepedians of the Month, new admins, new Wookieeprojects, new policy decisions and so on would fall under this category
- General Star Wars news
- Regular or semi-regular features, such as:
- Top ten/twenty countdown
- Interviews (that've been done via the VIP interviews project)
- Overheard (amusing or relevant commentary from around the internet)
- profiles of little-known EU contributors
- opinion polls
- source reviews
- maybe opinion pieces
Some folks have already expressed interest writing for this thing, should it ever leave the ground.
I already took the liberty of opening a blog on Wordpress, but I figured I'd test the waters here in the SH before created a Wookieeproject or, if need be, consensus track.
So: chime in and let me know how y'all feel about this. -- Trip 17:00, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds interesting. I just hope there's be enough will to carry this on. Blogs can die very easily. Stake black msg 17:12, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm against this, not that it'll make a diffrence. But when people start writing pages about themselves on the internet, then they are pretty sad ;P. Nah, I'm just oposed to blogs alltoghether. As wicket would say, they are "trouble!" :P - Kingpin13Cantina Battle Ground 17:17, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- WP:NOT. (That means oppose). Atarumaster88 (Talk page) 17:21, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- I am by no means a perennial hater, so my mind is open. There would have to be a distinction, such as those between the site, IRC, and the Wookiee-cast, to establish that the affiliation is in name only, and not between the blog and the site itself or its administration. I'd say I'm hesitant about the whole deal, as I also see a potential for user conflicts (i.e. opinion pieces, control of the blog, etc.). But I do think it would be beneficial to the site, and possibly even serve as a bit of advertisement. A small team of users to maintain it should be put together. - - Blogs ≠ journals
- - I'm thinking of a loose affiliation along the lines of the wookieecast or IRC-- what Grae said, basically.
- - The chief reason I created this thead, really, was to get ideas flowing.
- - In other words: help me think of a title. :P

- Meh, I'm leaning towards oppose (if this is a vote, which I feel is necessary before actually starting this). Chack Jadson (Talk) 22:23, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think that we could prevent in any way the creation of such a blog, merely decide whether or not we "approve" of it as an Official Friend of Wookieepedia and want to advertise its existence here. At any rate, I'd like to encourage users to keep an open mind. Try it, you may like it. Graestan(Talk) 22:31, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- Just wanted to note that Xwing328 already has an unofficial blog running on SW.com. http://blogs.starwars.com/Wookieepedia -- Riffsyphon1024 22:38, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- I like the idea. As Riff points out, this isn't really something new; though X's hasn't been updated for four months, which sorta emphasizes the need to have regular contribution to it. And as Grae mentions, the list of contributors would be kept limited and we'd need to have some sort of plan for what we want to focus on and feature. But with that in place, I think it could be beneficial, particularly to promote exclusive content like the interviews. I'm not really sure what Ataru's reasoning is, though; WP:NOT doesn't really seem to apply to an offsite blog. - Lord Hydronium 02:07, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- We already have one, Trip. :P In all seriousness, though, I'm quite in favor of the idea, depending on the amount of effort would be placed into it, as well as the type of regulation there is. I'm not talking about fascism, just some simple guidelines to whomever would be dealing with it. Possibly different sections for different contributers, or something along those lines? JorrelFraajic 02:14, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- To clarify up above, I thought he was referring to having individual userpage blogs here, which I think is a terrible idea. A site blog, with the proper moderation, well, I'd be more open minded about that. Atarumaster88 (Talk page) 02:35, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thinking about this more, maybe it could work. Would writers be voted on like admins, or what? Although this may be a bit premature, as it's still just a theory. Chack Jadson (Talk) 14:39, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Eh, Trip and I'll put something together to show everyone. Then we can talk affiliation. Graestan(Talk) 23:43, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'd be all for it, except for one thing. Some users on Wookieepedia would probably use the blog more than they contribute. While it would be great for advertising Wookieepedia further, and would be generally helpful to the site itself, a few users would probably forget what we actually do on Wooieepedia, which is, expland and create articles. If we do this, then we would have to impose some sort of regulation regarding the blogs, maybe like you must contribute to Wookieepedia first, or if you edit the blogs more thn the wiki itself. Sort of a combination between the user page policy and the QOTD voting policy. DC 19:40, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

- Blogs are for chumps. Okay, seriously: I think it's a good idea. It would be a nice way for casual Wookieepedians (like me) to more easily keep up with stuff. I would recommend y'all use Wordpress.com. --Dark Spork 03:10, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well I've been out of town for a good bit and busy with work and now school, but as Riff pointed out above, I do have a Wookieepedia blog - http://blogs.starwars.com/wookieepedia that I can definitely use for more official purposes if you all wish. The lack of updates was simply because I had no idea what to put on it, besides our featured articles, press releases, etc. If you do have things you'd like posted, feel free to contact me —Xwing328(Talk) 19:38, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think that the SW.com blog would work well, since it's smack bang in the middle of the target audience. It needs to be regularly updated though, so it can become a sort of...staple, there. And we could post the FAs, sure, but also the tutorials, the "Ms/Mr" competitions...things like that. Maybe some mini-interviews with regular contributors. I dunno. :P Thefourdotelipsis 00:54, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- If we do get one, Fourdot has to write for it. :P I think I would really enjoy reading some things he writes. You know how I got these scars? Chack Jadson (Talk) 12:05, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- The problem with the StarWars.com blogs is that they are extremely limited in function... And even now that their popularity has waned your content is likely to disappear within the day. You can do a lot more - and be taken more seriously - by using a real blog client. (For one: Multiple authors. You'll be waiting forever for StarWars.com to approve a multi-blog, and that requires multiple Wookieepedians with Hyperspace accounts.) Bonus? Wordpress.com is free, you don't have to install anything and it's pretty respectable with a ton of features. Blogs.StarWars.com tries, but it's just not set up for serious blogging. --Dark Spork 00:33, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- I like the idea. The only problem I see is lack of meaningful content. Still, the high interactivity is a plus. It's intriguing. --TK 421.5 19:31, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wordpress sounds like a good idea, and this is from Spork, a blogger by heart. -- Riffsyphon1024 01:40, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
