The Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service (GAIS) also known as GA Intelligence or The Intelligence Service was the main intelligence organization of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. Formed from its predecessor under the New Republic, the New Republic Intelligence Service, the GAIS served to protect the Galactic Alliance from threats and provided it with information and analysis on various organizations, persons, and situation.

Organization and roleEdit

The Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service was the leading intelligence agency of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. It provided the Galactic Alliance government with information regarding various situations and the organizations and persons who may pose a threat to the Galactic Alliance.^[2]

The GAIS was lead by the Director of Galactic Alliance Intelligence who reported to the Chief of State.^[1] The GAIS also used the ranks of Captain and Lieutenant. Intelligence officers were trained in various areas including interrogation, analysis, and observation and had the power of arrest.^[5] Intelligence Affiliates were intelligence agents who were independent of yet worked for the GAIS.^[6] The GAIS also worked closely with its sister agency, Galactic Alliance Fleet Intelligence.^[5]

HistoryEdit

The Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service was formed in 28 ABY in the aftermath of the disintegration of the New Republic during the Yuuzhan Vong War. It continued the operations of its predecessor, the New Republic Intelligence Service, under the leadership of Dif Scaur. In 30 ABY he was replaced by Belindi Kalenda.^[1]

In 36 ABY, before the onset of the Swarm War, the worlds of the Galactic Alliance were besieged by pirates that were smuggling an addictive strain of Black Membrosia. Several of these pirates were later captured and the GAIS determined that the Killik Colony in the Utegetu Nebula served as a haven for the pirates. Princess Leia Organa Solo later brought these findings to UnuThul but he denied her accusations.^[6]

Before the beginning of the Second Galactic Civil War in 40 ABY, seeing a need to fill the void between the police and the military in the face of increasing terrorists' treats on Coruscant, Chief of State Cal Omas formed the Galactic Alliance Guard under the leadership of Jacen Solo later Darth Caedus. Members of the GAIS as well as the Coruscant Security Force and the Galactic Alliance Special Forces, were brought in as a part of the GAG. Their work began as a secret police, performing raids and counter-intelligence operations. By the end of the war and the take over of the Galactic Alliance by Darth Caedus, the GAIS was placed under the control of the GAG with Heol Girdun as its director.^[2] The GAIS would continue to provide information throughout the Sith–Imperial War and then for the Galactic Alliance Remnant during the Second Imperial Civil War.^[4]

Behind the scenesEdit

The GAIS first appeared in the The Final Prophecy as part of the reorganized New Republic into the Galactic Alliance. This article assumes that the GAIS became an independent agency once more after the disbandment of the GAG.
