Gamorrean guards were Gamorreans under the employ of an organization, for the purpose of defending or blocking something. These guards were usually in a shady occupation, in the employ of a crimelord or criminal syndicate. They were favored over other species for the job because of their demeanor and size. However, before working for their employers, their customs demanded that they test his or her honor and skill in hand-to-hand combat.

Jabba Desilijic Tiure chose to employ them because of their loyalty to their masters and the fact they were dimwitted enough that they wouldn't betray him. He cheated in the hire ceremony, but the nine remaining of the twelve Gamorreans were still pressed into service. They were loyal, but most died.

[edit] Behind the scenes

The Gamorrean was one in a long line of sketches for Jabba's guards in Return of the Jedi. At that time, it was called simply, "pig guard" and the story of the entire species developed later based on the design.

In LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, they play their axe like a guitar when listening to the Imperial March.

In Star Wars: Battlefront II, Gamorrean guards are featured in Jabba's Palace as a hostile force to all sides. They are quite dangerous as they are able to kill enemies with only one blow with it's axe.
