"You are a general. I am a commander. You stand higher in military hierarchy."
Thrawn, who was actually a Senior Captain, to Jedi General Anakin Skywalker[23]

General was a senior rank in various armies, including the Imperial Army,[4] the Grand Army of the Republic,[2] the Separatist Droid Army,[3] the Alliance Army,[6] the Resistance Army,[9] and the First Order Army.[9] Generals were part of an army's hierarchy, as opposed to admirals, who had a high role in a navy.[4] While some nations in the Unknown Regions used the rank of general, others used the equivalent title of "generalirius."[8] Abediah Viess led a mercenary army of warrior-kin as a general.[11]

Gungan leader Boss Nass was so impressed with Jar Jar Binks' role in bringing the Gungan and Naboo people together that he promoted Binks to the rank of Bombad General. The clumsy Binks was one of the commanders of the Gungan Grand Army during the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo.[24] During the Clone Wars, the rank of Jedi General was bestowed on the Knights and Masters of the Jedi Order, giving them authority to lead the Galactic Republic's military forces.[25][26][27] Grievous was once a feared general of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[28] Armitage Hux was the highest-ranking general in the forces of the First Order, subservient only to Supreme Leader Snoke and his apprentice Kylo Ren.[9]
