Genetech Laboratories, otherwise known as Genetech Corporation, was an ancient pharmaceutical company that latter converted into one of the largest droid manufacturers in the galaxy.

The corporation was as old as the beginning of the Old republic itself, and at first dedicated exclusively to the manufacture of medicines. That however, started to change around the time that the use of droids began to became common amongst the corporate manufacturers of the galaxy, Genetech bought a small manufacturing plant and employed droid labor for most of its functions. This generated huge margins of profit for the company as they were able to dismiss a large number of employees, at the time this maneuver was highly controversial and proved to be one of the of the founding stones for the Anti-droid sentiment of the early days of the Old republic, regardless of this, Genetech decided to continue to purchase and build several other droid manufacturing plant investing some of their early profits.

This decision was ultimately, Genetech’s life saver, since after a particularly strong plague of Hive Virus ran its course across the Republic, the pharmaceutical company found itself almost bankrupt. The company highly respected anti-viral serum proved to be a failure to effectively combat the disease and Genetech stock reached an all time low. The executives of the company however, saw opportunity on this debacle, and after a couple of years and several legal battles, Genetech completely re-tooled from the Pharmaceutical business to manufacturing Medical droids, and became been very successful on this area.

Genetech owned the rights to several systems in the Galaxy, one of them was the Gorsh system whose rights had been granted by the Galactic Empire to them.

At one point Genetech sued Geentech Corporation for copyright infringement of their name, and won the court case, reportedly with the backing of the Empire. Genetech forced Geentech out of business, and acquired control of their operations, including Geentech Laboratories.
