Gharn was a Nagai Padawan at the Jedi Temple on Taris at the beginning of the Mandalorian Wars. He was one of the few Nagai Jedi candidates, and had a strong connection to the Force.

At some point, Gharn completed an assignment meant to serve as part of his Jedi Trials. In 3,964 BBY Gharn and the other four members of the next graduating class were taken to the Rogue Moon to train while their masters meditated. While there his master Xamar envisioned his own death and the fall of the Jedi Order; an act that would be committed, they thought, by one of their apprentices. While at a party for Gharn and the other graduates, the masters continued to hasten the process leading up to the Knighting ceremony where they planned to eliminate any hope that the Sith could return. After a visiting Jedi and his companions left Taris, Xamar and his compatriots brought their apprentices to the council chambers and murdered them.

Later, while in transit back to Taris, Raana Tey had a nightmare in which all of the murdered apprentices swapped positions with their masters and forced her to look at her own body.
