This page is to serve as a glossary of common terms and nomenclature used in the galaxy. More in-depth definitions can be obtained from those terms that have articles of their own.

- ABY: Abbr. for After the Battle of Yavin on the Galactic Standard Calendar
- Astronomical Unit: A unit of measurement for distance (abbr. AU), equal to approx. 150 million km (about 93 million miles).
- Ataru: A form of lightsaber combat, also known as Form IV.

- BBY: Abbr. for Before the Battle of Yavin on the Galactic Standard Calendar
- BCS: Abbr. for bulk cruisers
- Blaster: A weapon that fires powerful laser/plasma bolts.

- CorSec: 1) Contraction of Corellian Security Force or 2) Contraction of the Corporate Sector

- HIMS: Abbr. for Hyperwave Inertial Momentum Sustainer system. Also, His Imperial Majesty's Ship; this is a real acronym, but its application to Imperial vessels is fanon.
- Hyperdrive: Device used to propel a vehicle to supra-light velocities.
- Hyperlane: Prescribed hyperspace travel route.
- Hyperspace: 1) The universe as viewed by an object traveling at supra-light velocities. 2) Method of faster-than-light travel, uses hyperdrives. 3) Online portion of Star Wars fan club.

- ISD or ISD II: Abbr. for Imperial Star Destroyer and Imperial Star Destroyer Mark II, respectively.

- Juyo: Form of lightsaber combat, also known as Form VII and Vaapad

- Kilometer: Unit of measurement for length/distance (abbr. km), equal to 1000 meters (0.621371192 miles).

- Laser: 1) A beam/shaft of coherent light. 2) A device that emits laser beams.
- Lightsaber: Device that emits a blade of energy, used primarily by the Jedi Order.
- Light year: The distance light can travel in one year (abbr. ly), equal to 9.46073047 × 1012 km (5.87862537 × 1012 miles).

- NRI: Abbr. for New Republic Intelligence.

- OSETS: An acronym that refers to Orbital Solar Energy Transfer Satellite. An orbital energy system that was used on Coruscant for gathering and delivering sunlight to cold regions of the planet.

- Parsec: A unit of measurement for distance (stands for parallax of one arc second; abbr. pc), equal to about 3.26 LY (206,265 AU).
- Primary: The predominant object in an orbital system; the object being orbited. In the case of star systems, stars are the primaries; in planetary systems, planets are the primaries.

- RSF: Abbr. for Royal Security Force of Naboo.

- Sector: A sector is a subdivision of a region. Sectors were originally defined as an area of the galaxy that contained fifty inhabited planets. Due to exploration, many sectors have outgrown this figure.
- Shien: A form of lightsaber combat, also known as Form V.
- Shii-Cho: A form of lightsaber combat, also known as Form I.
- Soresu: A form of lightsaber combat, also known as Form III.
- SSD: Abbr. for Super Star Destroyer.
