Aboard Independence
A Gold Squadron was stationed aboard the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Independence during the build up to the Battle of Yavin. Many members were transferred to Yavin Base and reassigned to different squadrons for the Death Star assault.
Battle of Yavin
During the Battle of Yavin, Gold Squadron under the command of Jon "Dutch" Vander was tasked with attacking the Death Star's thermal exhaust port while Red Squadron flew cover. The entire squadron was wiped out except for Keyan Farlander, after which Red Squadron made the final successful trench run.[1]
- Gold Leader—Jon Vander
- Gold Two—Tiree
- Gold Three—Ryle Torsyn
- Gold Four—Lepira
- Gold Five—Davish Krail
- Gold Six—Hol Okand
- Gold Seven—Keyan Farlander[2]
After Yavin
In the months following the Battle of Yavin, General Crix Madine led a Gold Squadron of Y-wings working closely with Rogue Squadron on a number of bombing raids, including the Battle of Gerrard V.
Following the Battle of Hoth, a Gold Squadron flying X-wing fighters was stationed aboard the cruiser Liberty during operations against Imperial Task Force Vengeance in the Airam sector. It seems far more likely that 'Gold Squadron' is a combat designation rather than an official unit title. This explains the large number of 'Gold Squadrons' operating simultaneously in the Star Wars universe, allowing each theater of operations to assign combat callsigns to their respective starfighter units.
Battle of Endor
During the Battle of Endor (in which it was also referred to as "Gold Wing"), Gold Squadron fought as a mixed squadron[source?] of X-wings, Y-wings and other ships under the command of Lando Calrissian piloting the YT-1300 light freighter Millennium Falcon.
- Gold Leader—Lando Calrissian with Nien Nunb and Ace Azzameen (flying the Millennium Falcon)
- Gold Wing—unknown
Alliance of Free Planets
Shortly after the victory at Endor, the squadron fought Nagai forces in the Second Battle of Endor. It later engaged the Tof forces in the Battle of Saijo, destroying half of their Tof starfighters.
