"Then what's the use of being Mand'alor? No heir, no clan, no sense of duty. You're not Mandalorian. You just wear the armor."
―Goran to Mandalore Boba Fett in 40 ABY[src]

Goran Beviin was a Mandalorian commando, a bounty hunter and contract killer active under the New Republic and in the early years of the Galactic Alliance.

[edit] Biography

Known as something of a traditionalist, his blue armor was forged from Mandalorian iron rather than the more modern alloy that had been standard among the Mandalorian Protectors, and as well as a blaster, he carried the traditional Mandalorian weapons, a saber and highly illegal crushgaunts. Like many Mandalorians of this era, however, he flew a one-man Gladiator assault fighter.

In 24 ABY, Beviin was recruited by Yuuzhan Vong agent Nom Anor to assassinate an opposition politician on Ter Abbes, as part of the prelude to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. He subsequently fought against the invaders alongside Boba Fett and his fellow Mandalorians, and during the invasion of New Holgha, some three months into the war, Beviin became the first Mandalorian to scalp one of the invaders, a practice that had become widespread five years later at Caluula, towards the end of the war. During the war and the work with the Jedi Knight Kubariet, Beviin, like Fett, grew to like and trust the Jedi and be the only Jedi they trusted.

Beviin survived the Yuuzhan Vong War, and by the time of the Confederation-Galactic Alliance War, he had become one of Fett's most trusted lieutenants.

Beneath his mask and cuirass, however, Beviin hid an affable face with a bright, easy smile, and the genuine heart of a loving family man. Sometime before the New Holgha invasion, he took a husband, the blacksmith Medrit Vasur, and during the invasion the couple adopted the thirteen-year-old Mandalorian girl Dinua Jeban. Jeban's mother, Briika Jeban, had died in their united struggle against the same Yuuzhan Vong warrior whom Beviin had scalped. The family remained united during the Corellia conflict. Meanwhile, Beviin became increasingly close to Boba Fett, who considered him to be the closest thing he had to a friend and often named him acting Mandalore when the former was away.

When Jaina Solo came to train under Fett, Beviin personally welcomed her and had Venku Skirata and Gotab put away their blasters. He would often train with Solo on the command of Fett, besting her several times with his beskar saber. Eventually Medrit would get around to forging Fett a set of his own beskar upper body armor, though Beviin wanted greaves made for the Mand'alor as well.

[edit] Behind the scenes

His name derives from the Mando'a words "goran" for "smith" and "beviin" for "lance".

Though Beviin's husband, Medrit, had been mentioned in previous stories, it is not until Bloodlines, by Karen Traviss, that he first appears as a character, and readers learn that he is a male human. This establishes the couple as the first openly acknowledged homosexual human relationship in Star Wars literature.
