[edit] Role
Some of the less known handmaidens in the galaxy were the Echani sisters under Atris on Telos IV. They all had identical appearances (except Brianna, who had a different mother but the same father) and had abandoned their names.
But the more known were those on Naboo, serving the elected King or Queen (or perhaps the current Senator). They were composed of young women of a similar age and with a striking similarity to her. These handmaidens acted as bodyguards, decoys and confidantes to their mistress, roles devised by Amidala's head of security, Captain Panaka. Despite their beautiful and delicate appearance, they were heavily trained to be vigilant and able to protect the Queen's and their own life. All of Naboo's handmaidens were members of the secret Order of Sanctuary.[1]

[edit] Handmaidens of Queen Jamillia
The names of the handmaidens of Queen Jamillia are unknown but they are seen in the court scene at the Naboo throne room. They were circa four handmaidens doing their duty to the successor of Queen Amidala.
It can be rumored that Jamillia also had a double as Amidala had but it is unknown if it is true.
[edit] Handmaidens of Queen Apailana
It is rumored that the handmaidens seen at Amidala's funeral were the handmaidens of Queen Apailana, successor of Queen Neeyutnee, who had replaced Jamilia.
[edit] Handmaidens of Queen Kylantha
It has also to be noticed that there were perhaps also other handmaidens serving the queen but their names are unknown.

[edit] Behind the scenes
The idea of having handmaiden look-alikes first appears in Lucas's rough draft to Star Wars, where they accompany Leia to the Chatos Academy. One of her handmaidens takes her place to mislead the Empire when Annakin spirits her to safety as the Empire's space fortress arrives at Aquilae.[3]
All known handmaidens of Padmé Amidala seem to have the same last letter of their names. Whether this is a coincidence or the handmaidens changed their names as a custom has not been revealed.
