Handmaidens in the galaxy
Edit
The Echani Handmaiden Sisters served the Jedi Master Atris on Telos IV. They all had identical appearances, save Brianna, who had the same father as her half-sisters, but a different mother.
Perhaps the most notable of handmaidens were the handmaidens of the Monarch of Naboo. During the reign of Queen Amidala the handmaidens bore a striking resemblance to their mistress. They were members of the secret Order of Sanctuary and were highly trained in order to act as bodyguards, decoys, and confidantes to the Queen, roles devised by Captain Panaka. Queens Jamillia, Apailana, and Kylantha were also known to employ handmaidens.

Behind the scenes
Edit
The idea of having handmaiden lookalikes first appears in George Lucas's rough draft to Star Wars, where they accompany Leia to the Chatos Academy. One of her handmaidens takes her place to mislead the Empire when Annakin spirits her to safety as the Empire's space fortress arrives at Aquilae.[4]
All known handmaidens of Padmé Amidala seem to have the same last letter of their names. Whether this is a coincidence or the handmaidens changed their names as a custom has not been revealed.
