A heatbeam was a device that produced a highly focused sustained beam of light and heat that instantly burned whatever it was aimed at.

Originally designed as a manufacturing technology, a heatbeam was capable of producing enough heat to weld and cut through metals with ease. In addition to manufacturing, heatbeam technology was also used in survival technology, where it could serve as a fire starter, or a highly capable ranged weapon.
