The Hoersch-Kessel ion drive was a popular sublight drive developed and manufactured by Hoersch-Kessel Drive, Inc. during the Clone Wars. The drive generated ions using cryogenic cells and then expelling them through an exhaust nacelle to create thrust. Because the H-K Ion Drive created radioactive nuclear energy, all starships equipped with this model were required to use repulsorlifts or be towed while in a planet's atmosphere.
