Hoist cables were a strong cord wound to a cable drum that could be worn on a belt. They were used in moving heavy cargo or in climbing expeditions. Luke Skywalker was wearing one during the Battle of Hoth, and used it to ascend into the belly of an AT-AT in order to set a detonator inside.
