Homemade ion pistols were primarily anti-droid weapons, and were very easy to manufacture from scrap droid parts and blasters. A number of races, such as Jawas and Squibs, created these weapons to assist in their capture of droids for refurbishing and selling. They were often of shoddy quality and were said to have sometimes exploded in the user's hands.
