The Horizon was the name for the boundary of the Deep Core. It marked the points at which the accuracy of hyperspace jumps using astrocartographic data about a month old fell below navicomputers' safe margin of error—a product of the density of realspace bodies and stellar velocities in the Deep Core.

Rare exceptions were carved out for established Core systems over, such as Ator.
