The Yam'rii were enslaved by offworlders in 37 BBY, but freed themselves in an uprising the following year (36 BBY).[source?]

Around 10 years later, the Yam'rii were locked in a state of constant war with the Kaleesh people of the neighboring planet, Kalee. The Kaleesh would derogatorily refer to the Yam'rii as "huks", after the Yam'riis' homeworld, or "soulless bugs".

This period of conflict dragged on for many years prior to the Clone Wars, in what was called the Huk War. The Galactic Republic aided the Yam'rii in their war against the Kaleesh, due mainly to the Kaleesh's history as so-called 'oppressors'.

Decades later, the Yam'rii were part of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. During the Swarm War, however, they were among the insectoid races of the Galaxy who became Joiners and fought alongside the Killiks.

The Huk should not be confused with the Houk or the Huhk.

[edit] Behind the scenes

The Yam'rii first appeared in A New Hope as the "praying mantis" alien in the Mos Eisley Cantina. Nearly thirty years later, Labyrinth of Evil and The Eyes of Revolution mentioned the Huk, a race of insectoid aliens that had opposed General Grievous. Unknown Soldier: The Story of General Grievous identified the two races as the same.

The Huks were possibly named after the Huks, a militant group that opposed Japanese and American rule in the Philippines.
