A hypermatter reactor igniter—or HMRI—was a key component in a starship's hyperdrive, without which, initiating the jump to hyperspace was impossible. Once installed, the HMRI needed to go through a warm-up cycle before coming online. Once online, however, the hyperdrive could engage automatically.
