This Imperial-class belonged to the colloquially dubbed Super Star Destroyer league of warships,[6] and were among the smallest vessels with this distinction. Like the Imperial Star Cruisers,[6] these ships were smaller in scale than classes like the Eclipse and Executor.[4]
The class was similar in appearance to the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. However, these Super Star Destroyers lacked a ventral hangar bay.[4][5] The terraces surrounding the bridge tower were far smoother than those on the smaller Imperial-class, with better armor coverage and less exposure of the inter-plate surfaces.[4][5]
The Imperial-class SSDs had a large ventral reactor bulge, being fitted with a more massive reactor than on contemporary Star Destroyer designs.[5][7] The T-shaped command tower was put in full view of enemy vessels, and was similar in design to the modular KDY command towers.[6]

Imperial-class Super Star Destroyers were most active during the era of Emperor Palpatine's return, where they were pressed into numerous duties, including escorting command ships[8][4] and providing protection and support for Palpatine's forces at Byss.[5] They were used throughout this entire system to patrol and monitor traffic to and from the secluded throne-world, and they worked in conjunction with Gauntlet Scanner Stations, destroying any ships the stations identified as hostile.[9]
Several ships of this class escorted Palpatine's flagship, the Eclipse, as it travelled to the Cyax system. Their fates are unknown.[4][1]

The audio book version of Dark Empire calls these vessels both "Imperial-class destroyers" and "Super Star Destroyers", thus providing the only canonical name so far.
