Imperial Heavy Repeater
From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.
The Imperial Heavy Repeater was a projectile weapon used by Imperial troops. It was an improvement over the earlier Imperial Repeater, which was developed by Moff Rebus.
The heavy repeater had an extremely rapid fire rate and a moderate spread pattern. It differed from previous repeater models in two critical areas. First, it used metallic bolts similar to those used by the more primitive slugthrowers. Second, it carried an attached concussion grenade launcher, which allowed the gun to fire a concussive explosive.
The heavy repeater was valued by the Imperials for its rate of fire and effective suppression fire capabilities, and was often used for crowd control or to provide covering fire over a large area.
Though intended for use by Imperial forces, this weapon was eventually used by several different groups. It was particularly popular with Trandoshan mercenaries, and it was found in the armory of the Jedi Praxeum.
This weapon was also used by Kyle Katarn on many of his missions against the Galactic Empire.
[edit] Behind the scenes
Though the repeater used metallic slugs instead of blaster bolts, its ammunition was still able to be deflected by lightsabers in the Jedi Knight games. This should not have been possible unless the slugs were made of lightsaber-resistant metal (for example, Cortosis or Phrik) or through some unknown element of lightsaber physics. For example, it could be that the extreme amount of heat put into the bolts when fired was repulsed against the saber, driving back the bolts. If this latter situation is the case, it contradicts p. 135 of Hero's Guide, which details lightsaber deflection information. It is also possible that the rounds are sheathed in a coat of energy before being fired, similar to that of the also-deflectable Wookiee bowcaster.
It is also possible that the metallic bolts are magnetically charged so when they come into contact with the lightsaber they are deflected by the magnetic force field emitted by the lightsaber to maintain the shape of the blade (which is heated plasmatic energy)
Also, though the weapon's ammunition consists of metallic bolts, these bullets are depleted even when the secondary concussion launcher is fired. In contrast, the standard concussion launcher found in both games runs on power cells. This is most likely a game mechanic to make the weapon's ammunition system less complicated.
