The neural interface device was technology developed by the Galactic Empire which allowed a pilot to be directly plugged into their ship. The theory was that pilots could simply think their commands and eliminate the delay caused by manual inputs. The reality was that pilots quickly became overwhelmed by all the stimuli and the technology was mostly abandoned.

Edit
The neural interface technology was developed by top thinkers within the Galactic Empire and produced soon after Emperor Palpatine's ascent to power in 19 BBY. The Empire hoped to use the technology to connect Imperial pilots directly to their ships through biological means to eliminate any delay in reaction time. The implanted device was located in a pilot's skull and connected to the ship via four wires; two at the temples and two under the ears.[1]
Despite the quick progress seen at the Imperial Navy Research, Development and Engineering Center, the program abruptly ended with the loss of a transport carrying the prototypes of the technology. Years after the loss of the ship, the smuggler Glah Ubooki discovered the lost vessel and attempted to sell the prototypes. The smuggler would quickly discover that the data-intensive devices were only useful on smaller craft, as the excess of info would be impractical on larger vessels.[1]
