The Imperial Star Battlecruisers, also known as Imperial battle cruisers,[1] were warships made by KDY.[2]

[edit] Characteristics

The ships were larger than contemporary Star Destroyers and Republic-era heavy cruisers, as were the designs it was based on.[4][5][2] The battle cruisers were armed with laser cannons that needed bracing and recoil dissipation casings capable of handling gigaton-level explosions, in order to withstand the shots fired by them. Anything less and a shot would tear the warship into pieces.[1]

[edit] History

The Star Battlecruisers used by the Imperial Navy were comparable in design to battle cruisers used by Kuat during the time of the Old Republic.[2] The Imperial vessels saw more widespread service than the Republic-era ships.[2] KDY continued to produce new lines up to at least the Battle of Endor.[1]

[edit] Behind the scenes

"Like a handful of wealthy sectors, Kuat Sector is able to manufacture and maintain sectorial defense fleets which are supposed to be comparable in size and power to the ships of the Imperial Starfleet found more widely in the classic trilogy."
―Curtis Saxton, on the nature of ship design in the Kuat Sector as mentioned in AOTC:ICS.[|[src]]

The The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia tied together the KDY battle cruisers mentioned in The Bounty Hunter Wars with the KDY Star Battlecruisers mentioned in the Dorling Kindersley series of technical books, by using an alternate designation for the Procurator-class. This mirrors the information given by SW author Curtis Saxton in his official interview with TheForce.Net.
