Imperial combat assault tank pilots,[4] also known as GAV pilots, GAV troopers,[5] tank troopers,[6] were Imperial combat drivers specialized in operating the TX-225 GAVw "Occupier" combat assault tanks. Under Imperial occupation, the streets of Jedha were patrolled by Imperial combat assault tanks,[1] which were operated by two of the pilots.[7] Those perched in the command seat of the vehicle, barking out orders to the combat drivers within, were the Imperial combat assault tank commanders.[8] These troopers were also used as light infantry, trained for recon and skirmishes, as well as escort roles for combat vehicles.[9]

Equipment[]

GAV pilots wore a white colored plastoid armor[7] derivative of the coastal defender stormtroopers', incorporating elements including the chest armor, pauldrons, vambrace and rerembrace and the greaves worn over a light gray body glove. They wore a distinctive helmet[1] also shared with the drivers of the ground transport pilot corps[10] and a utility belt complete with several pockets.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Imperial combat assault tank pilots were created and developed for the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.[1] They were first revealed with the teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, on April 7, 2016.[11]

While filming, the pilots initially wore standard stormtrooper armor, but the costume was changed based on a suggestion by George Lucas.[12]
