Imperial remnant was a term that referred to the Galactic Empire in its fractured state.[2] Following the death of Darth Sidious, the Galactic Emperor, during the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY,[4] some members of the Imperial Ruling Council attempted to consolidate their areas of influence, while distant governors and Imperial officers seized what territories they could.[5] As a result, the Empire splintered into multiple remnant states such as Governor Adelhard's faction.[1] By 5 ABY, Counselor to the Empire Gallius Rax gathered the remnants of the Imperial Military on the planet Jakku, leading the forces of the New Republic to launch a direct attack on the Empire in an attempt to end the Galactic Civil War. Although the fighting would continue for months, the Battle of Jakku was a decisive victory for the Republic.[2] With Rax's death and the military shattered, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda surrendered the Empire with the signing of the Galactic Concordance.[3]

In spite of the Empire's defeat, some Imperials evaded capture by fleeing to the Unknown Regions of the galaxy.[2] In addition, several remnants continued their opposition against the Republic, although they were few in number due to Rax's implementation of the Contingency—a directive created by Sidious to ensure that the Empire would die with him. After the war, the Republic permitted Amedda to organize a provisional government on Coruscant. However, the Republic would send overseers to ensure that Amedda remained a figurehead in a powerless government.[2]
