- "It's an Imperial remnant, it's got to be."
- ―Lieutenant Shara Bey to Princess Leia Organa
The Imperial remnants were the various fractured constituents of the Galactic Empire which formed following the death of Darth Sidious, the Galactic Emperor, during the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY.
History
After the Emperor's death, some members of the Imperial Ruling Council attempted to consolidate their areas of influence, while distant governors and Imperial officers seized what territories they could.[7] As a result, the Empire splintered into multiple remnant states such as Governor Adelhard's faction[1] and Grand Moff Lozen Tolruck's Imperial territory G5-623 on Kashyyyk.[3] New Republic forces and their allies including the Wookiees and Bespin Wing Guard liberated Kashyyyk and Bespin from these Imperial remnants.[3][5]
By 5 ABY, Counselor to the Empire Gallius Rax was able to unite remnant forces of the Imperial Military into a single force on the planet Jakku, leading the forces of the New Republic to launch a direct attack on the Empire in an attempt to end the Galactic Civil War. Although the fighting would continue for months, the Battle of Jakku was a decisive victory for the Republic. With Rax's death and the military shattered, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda surrendered the Empire with the signing of the Galactic Concordance[5]. What little that remained the Imperial government in Core Worlds acquiesced to the Republic's condition that ordered all of the Empires forces be pulled back into both the Core and Inner Rim. With the borders now redrawn, a new remnant government was established, which reluctantly agreed to adhere to the treaty[4].
In spite of the Empire's defeat, some Imperials evaded capture by fleeing to the Unknown Regions of the galaxy where Grand Admiral Rae Sloane intended to build her own Empire. In addition, several remnants continued their opposition against the Republic, although most stood as fractured factions due to the implementation of the Contingency—a directive created by Palpatine to ensure that the Empire would die with him. Some groups were ardently opposed to settling for peace, and came together to form a faction that would lock itself into a Cold war with the Republic. After the war, the Republic permitted Amedda to organize a provisional government on Coruscant. However, the Republic would send overseers to ensure that Amedda remained a figurehead in a powerless government.[5]
Following the Galactic Concordance, various other remnant empires and nations continued to exist, all of which sought independence from the now dominant New Republic.[8] One of these including an Imperial remnant in the Queluhan Nebula led by Grand Moff Randd and Commander Nash Windrider.[4] The New Republic later welcomed several former Imperial sector governors into the Galactic Senate but many were saddled with heavy war reparations.[7]
Over two decades following the Battle of Jakku, the Imperial remnant was seen as less of a threat to the dominant New Republic. During this time a political movement began to take shape within certain wings of the New Republic Senate, leading to the establishment of the Centrists, an unofficial political party of people who believed in the increased centralization of governmental power. Some members of the party were sympathizers or even had ties with the remnants, as well as the ever growing First Order[9].
