Insectoid was a term that denoted a variety of sentient species that either looked like insects, had evolved from insects, or were insects themselves. The Verpine were a famous example of an insectoid sentient species. While most insectoids possessed a hive mind, a number of them existed with only a partial hive-consciousness or simply as individuals within the greater species. The term could also be applied to nonsentient species.
