Grand Master
From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.
- "Secret, shall I tell you? Grand Master of Jedi Order am I. Won this job in a raffle I did, think you? 'How did you know, how did you know, Master Yoda?' Master Yoda knows these things. His job it is."
- ―Yoda to Tallisibeth Enwandung-Esterhazy[src]
Grand Master was a title used in both the Old and New Jedi Orders to describe the recognized head of the Order. It was apparently separate from the title of Master of the Order, which was used to denote the leader of the Jedi High Council, rather than the entire Jedi Order.

History
Zym was the earliest known Grand Master, ruling during the Great Galactic War.[1] Yoda was the last known Grand Master of the Old Jedi Order, holding the title as early as 82 BBY.[2] Luke Skywalker achieved the title after he rebuilt the Order, although he did not formally assume the title until the Swarm War.[3] After Skywalker willingly exiled himself from the Jedi, Kenth Hamner was named acting Grand Master.[4] While the Grand Master was the unquestioned Jedi leader, all known Grand Masters still kept the Jedi High Council as a source of advice. Despite this, the Jedi Council could override the wishes of the Grand Master if they wanted, as seen when the High Council allowed Anakin Skywalker to be trained as a Jedi against Yoda's advice.[5]
Known Grand Masters
By chronological order:
- Zym (—3,653 BBY); first known Grand Master of the Old Jedi Order; led during the Great Galactic War until he was killed on Coruscant.[1]
- Yoda (—19 BBY); last Grand Master of the Old Jedi Order, leader until his death on Dagobah. He was Grand Master during the Stark Hyperspace War and the Clone Wars.[2]
- Luke Skywalker (36 ABY—); founder and Grand Master of the New Jedi Order, until his exile from the Galactic Alliance. He led the Jedi during many conflicts, most noticeably during the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Swarm War, and the Second Galactic Civil War.[3]
- Kenth Hamner (43 ABY—); acting Grand Master of the Order following Luke Skywalker's exile; appointed by Skywalker in hopes he would be able to handle Chief of State Natasi Daala.[4]
Behind the scenes
The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia introduced the title 'Master of the Order', used to denote the leader of the Jedi High Council. It is unclear if this title was meant to be another term for the Jedi Grand Master or not.
