|Jedi Temple Training Facility|
The Training Facility, also known as the Temple dojo, was a type of chamber located throughout the Coruscant Jedi Temple. Each chamber was specially designed for the training of Jedi Initiates in the art of lightsaber combat, as well as the use of their Force powers.
Constructed within the Jedi Temple of Coruscant, the training facilities would be added to the complex over the countless expansions and reconstructions the complex under went in its four thousand year history. While the Temple was destroyed during the Sacking of Coruscant by the resurgent Sith Empire in 3653 BBY, the structure and its training halls would be reconstructed as of 1000 BBY.
The training facilities would accommodate several generations of Jedi over their centuries of use. Jedi initiates Obi-Wan Kenobi and Bruck Chun engaged in a duel in a training chamber in an attempt to impress the visiting Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. While both were aggressive and very skilled, Jinn opted not to take an apprentice at the time. The two engaged in an unauthorized duel later in an attempt to prove once and for all who was the greater swordsmen. Both exhausted after a draw, Kenobi retired to his dormitories while Chun went to the Halls of Healing and feigned suffering from an attack by Kenobi. While the Jedi High Council was tasked with investigating the incident, Advanced Jedi Training Droid 6 reported that it had witnessed the fight and helped the Council discover Chun's deception. Master Jinn would remember these events a year later as he dueled Chun under the supervision of Grand Master Yoda. Chun lost the duel after giving Jinn a tough time, yet responded with respect, something that surprised Jinn and made him consider taking Chun as his Padawan.
Several days later the Temple was the site of a series of vandalism. The High Council tasked Masters Jinn and Tahl to investigate the incidents and no soon had the investigations started then another theft took place. Padawan Chun had alerted Temple Security that the Senior Apprentice Training Floor had been vandalized and the training lightsabers had been taken. Arriving in the wing, the two Masters found the locker rooms to be in shambles with training tunics strewn about the floor, ruined. Additionally on one of the walls a message, "Come, your time will. Beware you must, trouble I am," was scribbled in red paint. The note, mocking Yoda, set the Temple on red alert. It wasn't until several more incidents that the Jedi were able to discover Chun's involvement in the plot concocted by the Dark Jedi Xanatos to destroy the Temple.
Around 32 BBY, Padawan A'Sharad Hett was practicing in a long dueling chamber when the mysterious Jedi Master, the Dark Woman, entered and challenged the young man to a duel. Using her superior abilities, the Dark Woman taunted the Padawan, though was eventually disarmed. Goading the Jedi to kill her, the Dark Woman drop-kicked the apprentice, causing him to fall to the floor. Before the duel could go any farther, Masters Mace Windu, Even Piell, and Ki-Adi-Mundi descended from the observation booth and ended the bout. The Dark Woman helped Hett up and questioned why he did not use his full abilities to end the duel faster. He claimed that she was not his enemy, causing the Dark Woman to punch him in the jaw, dropping him again. The mysterious Master reprimanded all present and warned that no one can be considered a friend with the growth of the dark side of the Force. With her lesson finished, the Dark Woman passed through the wall using a unique Force ability.
While searching for the Mirialan pirate Arwen Cohl, Master Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi headed for a training chamber where a class was being held by Master Anoon Bondara. After watching the end of the morning long practice session from an observation booth, the two Jedi waded out into the chamber filled with the two dozen Padawans and their masters in search of Master Luminara Unduli. Master Jinn introduced his Padawan to Master Unduli and she gave a brief history of Cohl. Unduli was shocked to hear that Jinn believed him alive after reports claimed he died over Dorvalla.
Years later, Kenobi had taken Anakin Skywalker as his student and decided that he should take private training lessons with lightsaber virtuoso Soara Antana. While initially Antana took Skywalker out into a rundown area of Galactic City, eventually she held the sessions at the Temple where Skywalker was asked to repeat the basics of lightsaber training, much to his ire. It wasn't until he left the training chamber that the true test, a surprise attack from Padawan Ferus Olin, would take place.
During the Clone Wars, Skywalker was granted an apprentice by the High Council, Ahsoka Tano. Following the Battle of Christophsis, Skywalker sent for Tano demanding she meet him in a dojo. As Master Kenobi watched from an observation booth, Skywalker tasked Tano with fifty repetitions of Niman Form I while a recording was made. After she completed the reps she was to analyze the recording and note all of her mistakes. After she had finished Skywalker and Kenobi decided to spar, walking down to the chamber floor and entering into a fierce mock-battle. As a crowd formed in the observation deck, the two duel at almost a blinding pace. When they finished, the crowd dispersed and Skywalker sent Tano off to study.
Before the Battle of Praesitlyn, Skywalker found Master Nejaa Halcyon in the training area and began to build a friendly repertoire with the disgraced Master as they dueled day after day. Together, they shared tactics and new skills learned throughout the war and on missions around the galaxy. During the combat session, the room's holographic capabilities transformed the chamber into a jungle environment.
At the close of the Clone Wars, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was revealed to be the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious. While only a few members of the High Council knew of this revelation, the rest of the Order was never made aware as the arresting party was slain by the Sith during an attempted arrest. Before the other Jedi could react, Sidious, in his capacity of Supreme Chancellor, ordered that the 501st Legion of the Grand Army of the Republic lay siege to the Temple and slay its occupants. Led by the Sith Lord Darth Vader, the clone troopers stormed the Temple and slaughtered everyone within, ruining the complex in the process. The training halls were blasted and rubble was strewn across the once polished interior.
During the siege, Vader went searching for the leader of the Temple resistance, Jedi battlemaster Cin Drallig. As he headed for the northeast quarter of the Temple, the Sith encountered Drallig's apprentice Serra Keto in a dojo within the Tower of First Knowledge. The two dueled briefly, ending when Vader severed a pillar with his lightsaber and used the Force to crush Keto under the large polished stone column. Drallig witnessed this and engaged the murderer, eventually making his way to the base of the Temple where he would be cut down in the Room of a Thousand Fountains.
The Temple sat in silence for several years, with only a few stormtroopers stationed within to maintain the occupation. In 2 BBY, over a decade after being invaded, Vader's secret Sith apprentice, Starkiller, entered the Tower of First Knowledge and fought his way into one of the two-story Padawan Training Chambers. There he was attacked by the still active training droids, though he was able to defeat each of them in turn. After Marek left, the chambers fell back into silence throughout the Galactic Civil War and the fall of the Galactic Empire. Eventually the Towers of the Temple were leveled by the Lusankya's eruption from beneath the planet's cityscape, destroying several dojos within. Luke Skywalker, leader of the reformed Jedi Order established a small praxeum on the rooftop of the Ziggurat, including within a large training facility that made use of the ruined rooftop. While this stood for a time, Coruscant was eventually lost to the Yuuzhan Vong and the Temple was completely shattered.
Years after the Galactic Alliance retook the capitol, Chief of State Cal Omas ordered that the Reconstruction Authority rebuild the Temple as a gift to the New Jedi Order. Taking on a modern look, the Jedi Temple was rebuilt to old specifications and was largely the same internally. The Training Facility served the same purpose as it had decades previous, with Jedi Knights constantly perfecting their skills.
During the Second Galactic Civil War Grand Master Skywalker's son, Ben, was pitted against a four-legged droid which shot foamsteel balls from its arms which were to be deflected by Skywalker's lightsaber. Following his defeat of the droid, Apprentice Seha Dorvald entered the chamber and covertly handed Skywalker a card with instructions from Skywalker's unofficial master, Jacen Solo. Heading to his quarters to decipher the message. Demanding that he make his way to the fourth level changing rooms, Skywalker took a locker code and accessed the designated locker and retrieved the clothes planted there. Making his way through the laundry chutes, the boy was able to escape the Temple undetected through the Temple district.
Later, Knights Jaina Solo and Zekk were in a training hall discussing the meaning of Solo's title "Sword of the Jedi". Jagged Fel, a friend of the Jedi Order, sat in the room and suggested that the Sword was similar to the Chosen One and that she was to eliminate the Sith, namely Lumiya. Solo was intrigued by this speculation but was distracted when Fel's tracking equipment beeped signaling that the Temple's security system had detected Dark Jedi Alema Rar on board the Jedi-monitored Errant Venture. Viewing the footage on a wall mounted holoscreen, Fel and the two Jedi left the room and the Temple to hunt Rar down.
Layout and styleEdit
The training facilities within the Jedi Temple were constructed in many different ways to give the user a different experience throughout the complex. Ranging from simple dojos to specialized combat arenas, these chambers often time had changing rooms and sanisteams located adjacent to the main combat room. Most chambers were also equipped with observation decks which allowed spectators to watch without being in the way of the duelists within.
Located within the Tower of First Knowledge were at least two training chambers. Off of the Tower entrance was a dimly lit two-story chamber used for combat training. Another passage led from the second story onto a balcony overlooking the central chasm of the tower. The second story balcony was lined with small statues which opened to reveal training droids capable of simulating Force lightning, while on the first level, stone statues of Jedi Masters opened to unleash lightsaber-wielding droids. Control panels situated in between the first level statues were used to activate a containment field which allowed observes to watch without interfering in the duel or from being attacked by the droids. Once defeated, the droids would return to their holding cell below the floor. A smaller, simpler dojo was found higher up in the tower. Well lit by a window facing Tranquillity Spire, this dojo's walls were pillared with tall bronzium statues reaching up to the second story balcony. Racks on the wall held training remotes while tapestries depicting various stances of lightsaber combat hung on the second level.
Aside from the smaller, single person chambers, the Temple also contained longer style training halls with mirrors lining the walls. Over the doorways of some of these chambers were holomonitors capable of displaying messages or security footage. These rooms usually were equipped with a droid storage chamber where the training droids were stored until activated for combat.
Some of the most advanced chambers, such as those located above the detention facility were equipped with holoprojectors in the walls and ceilings. These chambers, capable of replicating nearly any environment through the use of the holos, simulating devices, and environmental controls, were used for training Jedi in preparation for the missions that they would face out in the galaxy. Platforms and holo-devices could be dispensed from the floors and walls to help continue the illusions of the chambers.
