"I've spoken […] with Kardavan penitents who had spent their entire lives attempting to ameliorate the suffering of beings with whom they shared no bond of kinship or community."
―Hali Ke's internal memorandum[3]

The Kardavan penitents were a group[3] that originated in[2] the Kardava system of the Mid Rim's Sevastol sector.[1] The group's membership included Humans. Several penitents devoted their entire lives to alleviating the suffering experienced by individuals who were complete strangers to them. At some point by 27 BBY,[3] the Kaminoan[4] geneticist Hali Ke interviewed and psychoanalized those penitents in an attempt to understand the various Human mental processes giving rise to viciousness as well as kindness and altruism that emerged from the properties of their genetic code. Ke later noted their encounter with the Kardavan penitents in an internal memorandum composed that year.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The Kardavan penitents were originally meant to be introduced in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart; however, the section that would have mentioned the group was cut before the book's release. The information regarding the penitents was later released in 2014 as part of Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare Author's Cut, a series of articles published on the StarWars.com Blog by Fry and[3] Del Rey editor[5] Erich Schoeneweiss containing various cut content from the book.[3]

(backup link) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas, stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. Given this principle, this article makes a similar basic assumption for Kardavan penitents in relation to the Kardava system.
