"You know, some say you're the greatest spy in Mos Eisley spaceport. Some say you're wildly wealthy. Some say you're greedy, unprincipled, and dirty, that you do what you do for the pure joy of destroying so many well-laid plans. So tell me, Long Snoot. What are you really?"
"I am very far from home."
―Kardue'sai'Malloc and Garindan ezz Zavor[4]

Kardue'sai'Malloc was a wily Devaronian who served as a cruel army captain on his homeworld, Devaron. He later went into hiding under the alias Labria while on the run from his wicked past life, which had resulted in him having one of the largest bounties in the galaxy. Pretending to be a major informant, Kardue'sai'Malloc spent much of his time in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina in Mos Eisley spaceport on the planet Tatooine.

In 0 BBY, he was present in the cantina when the Kubaz spy Garindan ezz Zavor entered seeking two droids that the Galactic Empire was searching for, and was later sharing a jigger of Merenzane Gold with two other patrons when the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi got into an altercation with the criminals Doctor Cornelius Evazan and Ponda Baba at the establishment's bar. Zavor then asked Kardue'sai'Malloc to help him find work, and the Devaronian set him up with an assassination job with the Ketton Derrida.

Kardue'sai'Malloc played sabacc with Nabrun Leids and Muftak.

Kardue'sai'Malloc was a Devaronian from the jungle planet Devaron,[1] where he served as an army captain.[2] By 0 BBY,[5] he was a war criminal[6] on the run from a wicked past with one of the galaxy's highest bounties on his head for his deadly crimes. Using the assumed name Labria,[7] he hid in the Mos Eisley spaceport on the planet Tatooine, trying to pass himself off as a major informant despite being a terrible spy.[2] During the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic, he spent much of his time in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina enjoying drinks with other unsavory locals.[8]

During that time period,[5] he played a game of sabacc with the Morseerian[9] Nabrun Leids[10] and the Talz[9] Muftak[7] in one of the booths of the cantina while the bounty hunter Bossk'wassak'Cradossk was seeking the rogue Imperial astromech droid 261 in the establishment.[9] On a morning[4] in 0 BBY,[5] Kardue'sai'Malloc was once again in the cantina and was hiding his pointy smile and tapping his fingers to music no one else could hear when the Kubaz informant Garindan ezz Zavor entered in search of two droids that the Empire was looking for. After Zavor left to continue his search elsewhere,[4] the Devaronian met with the Pacithhip[10] Ketwol[11] and the Defel[10] Arleil Schous[12] in the cantina. The group shared a jigger of Merenzane Gold, an alcoholic beverage, at a table next to the Lamproid[10] Dice Ibegon[13] when a fight broke out at the bar between the criminals Ponda Baba and Doctor Cornelius Evazan and the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. During the fight, the local moisture farmer Luke Skywalker was thrown into the table beside Kardue'sai'Malloc and his companions.[10]

Labria and Long Snoot[]

"Bad news, Long Snoot?"
"I need a job. Something quick. Today."
"Do you know Derrida, the Ketton? She needs a number two for a job. Tonight."
―Kardue'sai'Malloc and Garindan ezz Zavor[4]

Kardue'sai'Malloc sat with Dice Ibegon (left) and Ketwol (right) at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina.

Kardue'sai'Malloc was still in the cantina when Zavor later returned for another drink, and while the Kubaz waited to receive payment on a job he had completed, the pair discussed[4] the cantina house band: Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes.[10] When the Kubaz learned he would not be getting paid, his snout deflated, and Kardue'sai'Malloc asked if something was wrong. Zavor told the Devaroninan that he needed a quick job that day, and so, with renewed interest in the Kubaz, Kardue'sai'Malloc told him that the Ketton Derrida needed a number two for an assassination that night.[4]

When the Kubaz questioned why Kardue'sai'Malloc had not taken the job himself, the Devaronian laughed and told him it was too much work, but when Zavor slid him half a credit, Kardue'sai'Malloc explained that no one else would take it because it involved going against the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Zavor accepted the job and Kardue'sai'Malloc messaged Derrida from his datapad, informing the Kubaz that she would send him coordinates. He then questioned Zavor on the various rumors surrounding the Kubaz, chuckling and returning the half credit for an answer when Zavor gestured for it. The Kubaz then simply told Kardue'sai'Malloc that he was a long way from home and left.[4]

Personality and traits[]

"Why don't you take it, then?"
"Too much work."
"Why has no one else taken the job?"
"It's against the Alliance. No one likes taking sides. The humans don't, I mean. One master is much the same as another."
―Garindan ezz Zavor and Kardue'sai'Malloc[4]
LabriaCrowd-Activity

Kardue'sai'Malloc was a regular at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina.

Kardue'sai'Malloc was a wily,[14] cruel, and vicious individual.[8] He considered one master much the same as the other when taking jobs and was not concerned about siding with the Empire or Alliance during the war but believed that it was something that humans specifically took issue with. However, he considered working with Derrida on an Imperial assassination to be too much work but passed along information on the job to Zavor, divulging its controversial nature only when paid half a credit. Once Zavor accepted the job, Kardue'sai'Malloc looked at the spy as though seeing him for the first time and, having heard many rumors about the Kubaz, the Devaronian was willing to return the half credit to learn what Zavor considered to be the truth.[4]

Kardue'sai'Malloc considered the music of Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes to be good and criticized Zavor's knowledge when the Kubaz claimed that the band's performance was lacking in higher tones. Zavor did not believe that the Devaronian could understand him or read even a fraction of any body language he expressed, although he was able to note the Kubaz's reaction to learning he had not been paid. When thinking, Kardue'sai'Malloc audibly slid his pointed teeth in and out of place. He had red skin[4] and brown eyes.[3]

Skills and abilities[]

Kardue'sai'Malloc had average speed, strength, intelligence, and fighting abilities but had below average diplomatic skills[8] and was a terrible spy.[2] He was not Force-sensitive.[8]

Equipment[]

"Tell her I'll do it."
"It's done. She'll send you coordinates."
―Garindan ezz Zavor and Kardue'sai'Malloc talk as Kardue'sai'Malloc sends a message to Derrida with his datapad[4]

At the cantina, Kardue'sai'Malloc wore an outfit including a brown scarf,[3] a black cape, a gray shirt, silver gauntlets, and a black belt.[1] He also owned black gloves, black pants, and black boots.[15] He used a datapad[4] and weapons including a DL-18 blaster pistol[1] and a DL-44 heavy blaster pistol.[15]

Behind the scenes[]

Filming and costume[]

Labria-Mask

Kardue'sai'Malloc's mask was created by Rick Baker.

Kardue'sai'Malloc was portrayed by Penny McCarthy[16] in the original trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope,[3] which was released on May 25, 1977.[17] The character's shots were filmed during additional photography[18] in post-production where supplemental footage was created for the cantina sequence[19] on a sound stage in Dovington's Hollywood studio between January 24 and 25, 1977,[20]

Makeup artist Rick Baker created the latex Kardue'sai'Malloc's mask for an early 1970s John Landis film pitch that was never released called "I was a Teenage Vampire," and it was then used in "The Thing in the Attic," a Halloween show by Bob Burns in 1974.[21] By the time it was used in Star Wars, the mask had been altered by shortening the horns and removing a beard.[22] The character was called "Louie," "the Devil,"[18] and "Devil Guy" on set.[22] The mask was later gifted to Burns and his wife, Kathy Burns, who then had it partially restored for display by Tom Spina Designs as it had become distorted.[21]

Name and non-canon[]

In the current Star Wars canon, both of the character's names were first used in the mobile card game Star Wars: Force Collection,[2] which initially launched in 2013. Although the launch of Force Collection predates[23] the Star Wars canon reset of 2014,[24] Lucasfilm Story Group member Leland Chee confirmed that the game was kept updated to fit with canon.[25] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the character was first identified as just "Labria" in Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope, a 1989 supplement written by Grant S. Boucher for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[26] The name Kardue'sai'Malloc was then introduced in "Empire Blues: The Devaronian's Tale," a short story written by Daniel Keys Moran and published in the 1995 anthology Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina.[27]

Kardue'sai'Malloc appeared alongside Homer Simpson in the Simpsons short Maggie Simpson in "The Force Awakens From Its Nap."

Kardue'sai'Malloc appears in Maggie Simpson in "The Force Awakens From Its Nap", a non-canon Simpsons short[28] released on May 4, 2021.[29] In the short, the Devaronian can be seen during the credits talking to another patron next to Homer Simpson at the bar of the Mos Eisley cantina.[28] The character also appeared in "Tatooine Rhapsody," an ambiguously canon short film in the Star Wars: Visions series[30] released on September 22, 2021.[31] In the film, the Devaronian is shown at the bar in the Mos Eisley cantina while other patrons watch a performance by the band Star Waver on handheld viewscreens.[30] Kardue'sai'Malloc is also shown listening to the Modal Nodes play at the cantina when rebel agent Kori Zaran passes through while trying to reach Echo Base on the planet Hoth in the 2023 non-canon LEGO book LEGO Star Wars Galaxy Mission, which was written by Julia March with LEGO models by Rod Gillies.[32]
