"It's a system we cannot afford to lose."
Obi-Wan Kenobi[5]

The Kashyyyk system, known by the Trandoshans as the Hsskassi system, was located in the Mytaranor sector of the Mid Rim.

History[]

TrandoshaWasskah-PL

Trandosha and its moon Wasskah were also located in the Kashyyyk system

The solar system contained the inhabited worlds of Kashyyyk, home of the Wookiees,[4] and Trandosha, home of the Trandoshans. It also contained the Wookiee colony moon of Alaris Prime, orbiting the gas giant Alaris,[3] as well as the Trandoshan moon of Wasskah, where Trandoshans hunted various species captured around the galaxy for sport.[6] The Trandoshans knew it as the Hsskassi system, but the wider galaxy would call it the Kashyyyk system when the Wookiees became its first, and sole, representatives in the Republic Senate.[7] The system was relatively isolated as it was far from the central trade routes, although it was located close to a major route for the southwestern quadrant, and was home to an important Republic navigation and communication relay station.

During the beginning of the Jedi Civil War, Kashyyyk was controlled by Czerka Corporation, who had struck a deal with the corrupt Wookiee chieftain Chuundar and enslaved the Wookiee population to run an illegal slave-trade operation out of the planet. The amnesiac Revan, aided by his Wookiee life-debtor and brother of Chuundar, Zaalbar, overthrew Chuundar and incited the planet-wide Rebellion on Kashyyyk, forcing Czerka to abandon their slave-trade operation and leave the system.

The Wookiees and Trandoshans of the system were locked in a bitter rivalry for centuries. During the waning days of the Republic, this became a pressure point when debate arose over which planet's representative would be chosen as the system's Senator in the Galactic Senate.

During the New Sith Wars, a skirmish took place on Alaris's moon Alaris Prime in 1002 BBY.[8] Sometime later, Alaris Prime became lost to galactic view for centuries.[3] The bounty hunter Cradossk made trips to the moon during his adolesence.[9] Between 59 BBY and 56 BBY,[10] Alaris Prime was rediscovered by Wookiee explorers from Kashyyyk, beginning a lengthy debate in the Senate over colonization rights. The Wookiees were represented by Chieftain Attichitcuk, and were opposed by the Trade Federation of Planets, who wanted to use Alaris Prime as a way-station between Kashyyk, Kessel, and Bimmisaari. The Republic ultimately gave the rights to the Wookiees after twenty years of debate.[3]

Between 39 BBY and 36 BBY,[11] the Wookiee colonists, led by Attichitcuk in honor of his senatorial representation, travelled through the Alaris Expanse to Alaris Prime aboard the Thalmussen and three other colony ships. The Trade Federation also secretly arrived on Alaris Prime to launch their own illegal colonization effort, arriving shortly before the Wookiees. The Wookiees discovered the Trade Federation's presence when both groups clashed at a nest of gundarks. This lead to a war between the two factions for control of the moon, which the Wookiees eventually won.[3]

Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil describes a skirmish occurring on Alaris Prime one month after Dessel's expulsion from the Gloom Walkers, which in turn took place one year after the beginning of the main events of Darth Bane: Path of Destruction and thereby corresponds to 1002 BBY, according to The Essential Reader's Companion. Therefore, Alaris Prime's disappearance from the galactic view, as described in the DataBank of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, must have occurred after 1002 BBY.

  10. The New Essential Chronology places the Alaris Prime colonial war as portrayed in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds between 39 BBY and 36 BBY. Galactic Battlegrounds stated that the Galactic Senate took twenty years to distribute the colonization rights after Alaris Prime was discovered, indicating that the discovery took place between 59 BBY and 56 BBY
