"One of my hunters has gotten himself into a bit of a pickle, I'm afraid. While exploring what he thought was an abandoned tusk-cat den, he uncovered a nest of nightspiders."
Sloan Rusper, to a spacer[2]

The nightspider was a species of large, predatory spider that could be found on Naboo.

Biology and appearance[]

Nightspiders were large arachnids native to the planet Naboo and its moon Rori. They were known to use a deadly poison to kill prey or defend themselves. At least one strain, the Poison Spitter, could shoot its poison at a target. The King Venom Nightspider was the most aggressive and deadliest of all subspecies.[1]

Nightspiders were likely related to hermit spiders, another arachnid species from Naboo.[1]

History[]

"I've been given my first assignment as an RSF Agent. It's not glorious, but it's a start. I'm to reduce the nightspider population around Kaadara."
Jonthol Mazoon[3]

In 1 ABY,[4] a hunter working for Sloan Rusper discovered a nest of nightspiders while investigating an abandoned tusk cat den near Restuss. The hunter was then rescued by a spacer who killed two nightspider aggressors.[2]

During his career in the Royal Naboo Security Forces, Jonthol Mazoon was tasked to reduce the nightspider population around the city of Kaadara and eliminate the giant nightspider Noctur'lan.[3] In 1 ABY,[4] a spacer was tasked by RSF Lieutenant Dunnels to kill nightspiders and collect their venom sacs in order to produce a batch of neural boosters.[5]

Nightspiders appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[6] In the game, nightspiders were virtually identical to hermit spiders but no explicit relationship was established between the two species.[1]

  4. 4.0 4.1 According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
