"A death-mask from Langoona!"
―Jiliac Desilijic Tiron bellows in outrage upon receiving a Langoonan deathmask as a gift[1]

The Langoonans were a sentient species native to the planet Langoona, located within Hutt Space. The species was enslaved by the Hutts, who favored them until the Langoonans unsuccessfully rebelled. This resulted in the Langoonans being stripped of all technology and almost being driven to extinction, with only small numbers kept alive as prey for Hutt safaris.

Biology and appearance[]

The Langoonans were a sentient species. Their anatomy allowed them to craft masks.[1]

Society and culture[]

The Langoonans lived on the planet Langoona,[2] within the Langoona system[3] of Hutt Space. Their homeworld included warm oceans and habitable islands, upon which some Langoonans created objects known as deathmasks. These deathmasks were decorated with semi-precious gems and inlaid with silver, gold, platinum, and iridescent shells from the ocean.[1]

The Langoonans lived as slaves of the Hutt species and served them well enough to become a favored slave species among their masters. This situation changed, however, after the Langoonans unsuccessfully attempted to rebel against the Hutts, at which point their society was stripped of technology. The small Langoonan population that survived was preserved by the Hutts for use in safaris, where they hunted the slave species as prey.[2]

History[]

Durga LoNH

Durga the Hutt considered Langoonan deathmasks a treasure.

The Langoonans' homeworld was considered part of Hutt Space as early as 25,000 BBY. The natives were, at some stage, enslaved by the Hutts, who controlled the area of space in which the Langoona system was located. After pleasing the Hutts sufficiently to become considered a favored species, the Langoonans rebelled against their masters, unsuccessfully. The Hutts drove the Langoonans to the edge of extinction and stripped them of all their technology. The master species then maintained a small population of Langoonans for use in safaris.[2]

By 1 BBY,[source?] Langoonan deathmasks were considered valuable pieces of art by Durga Besadii Tai, head of the Besadii kajidic. Durga gave one mask as a gift to Jiliac Desilijic Tiron, head of the Desilijic kajidic, as a sign that he intended to kill her.[1] Langoona was still considered part of Hutt Space by 137 ABY.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The Langoonans were first mentioned in the 1998 novel Rebel Dawn, the final installment of The Han Solo Trilogy, written by A. C. Crispin. The story does not mention the species by name but describes them as the natives of Langoona.[1] Their name was revealed along with the location of their homeworld in Hutt Space when they were mentioned in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, written by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace.[2]
