"The platoon sergeant had previously distinguished his unit in operations on Balmorra, Lasan, and the Metellos Ring."
TX-5532, Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide[4]

Lasan was a Wild Space planet. An arid and warm world, its surface featured desert and plains as well as high mountains. Lasan was inhabited by herbivorous banthas and the sentient, humanoid Lasat.

The Lasat were mostly nomadic, tribe-based trappers at a relatively low level of technology; however, a few regions on Lasan had developed city-states with social stratification and feudal-level technology, including comparatively advanced applied chemistry. Lasan was an isolated world that was seldom visited by interstellar traders, and only a handful of the Lasat were found in the wider galaxy. By 0 BBY, the Galactic Empire fought in the conflict known as the Lasan Suppression.

Description[]

Lasan was an isolated terrestrial planet[2] located in the Lasan system, a part of Wild Space.[1] The planet's surface featured expansive desert and plains that were divided by high mountains. Lasan's climate was arid and warm, although the nights in the desert were cold. The fauna of Lasan included banthas, herbivorous herd animals that migrated between seasonal grazing grounds,[2] and other, larger herbivores.[3]

History[]

"Tango Company fought during the Lasan Suppression, earning its members the Imperial Medal of Valor."
TX-5532, Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide[4]

A complete survey of Lasan had never been performed, with the initial survey revealing the planet's terrain features. Evidence suggested that the first Lasat, members of Lasan's native sentient species, who traveled offworld did so after being captured by slavers. However, those Lasat were soon released, as they made poor slaves and were potentially dangerous because of their typically advanced chemistry skills. Overall, only a handful of Lasat were found in the wider galaxy.[3]

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Tango Company of the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps fought during the conflict known as the Lasan Suppression. The stormtroopers of the 501st Legion's Negastrike platoon also participated in an operation on Lasan. Subsequently, Tango Company's and Negastrike platoon's operations on Lasan were mentioned in the Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide, an Imperial Military manual published[4] by 0 BBY.[5]

When the trader To'iir consulted the Trader's Gamble feature of the Lantillian Spacers' Brotherhood's Free-Trader's Guide service for a possible hiding place from Imperial Moff Roff's forces, the service erroneously listed Lasan, named "Lasat," as being located in the Slice portion of the Outer Rim Territories. After going through a list of fourteen planets, including "Lasat," To'iir decided he and his partner, Liadden, would travel to Gamorr[6] in the Outer Rim.[7]

Inhabitants[]

Lasat

The Lasat were native to Lasan.

Lasan was inhabited by the Lasat,[2] a species of sentient, rodent-like,[8] carnivorous[2] humanoids descended from a canine species.[9] The Lasat used a spoken language to pass down their history via a rich mythological tradition despite also having developed a simple hieroglyphic script.[2]

The Lasat were mostly tribal-based nomads, with more primitive, stone age-level tribes using simple traps to catch minor animals for food, and nets and spears for larger game. The more technologically advanced Lasat tribes followed bantha herds and trapped them to obtain wool, meat, and hides.[2]

Some groups of Lasat, considered to be more civilized, were at an early feudal level of technology and were developing rudimentary metal-working. Socially-stratified Lasat city-states had also been developed in a few regions of the planet, and the urban-dwelling Lasat were practicing applied chemistry at disproportionately advanced levels. Few interstellar merchants made deals with the Lasat. The occasional free-traders that visited Lasan only exported the local rugs and tapestries.[2]

Both the tribal and urban Lasat were governed by religious monarchs, and small-scale conflicts between neighboring Lasat communities were fought by a warrior-police caste. In those wars, the city-states increasingly employed the tribes of nomadic Lasat as mercenaries.[2]

Although the Lasat society was largely nomadic, two regions on Lasan had developed city-states. The Lasat inhabiting cities lived in buildings made out of mud bricks.[2] The Lantillian Spacers' Brotherhood's Free-Trader's Guide service categorized the planet "Lasat" as having a "Starport of Limited Services or less."[6]

Behind the scenes[]

"Although the Brotherhood has verified facts where possible, no guarantee of accuracy is assured or implied."
―The Free-Trader's Guide service warning in "A Free-Trader's Guide to the Planets"[6]
SWAJ10

Lasan was introduced as "Lasat" in Star Wars Adventure Journal 10.

The planet named "Lasat" was introduced in "A Free-Trader's Guide to the Planets," an article written by Timothy O'Brien and published in May 1996 in the West End Games' Star Wars Adventure Journal 10.[6] In the "Alien Encounters" feature of the November 1996 Star Wars Adventure Journal 11, O'Brien instead used "Lasat" as the name for a species native to the world of "Lasan,"[3] a spelling repeated in all further sources mentioning the planet.[2][4][9]

In "A Free-Trader's Guide to the Planets," "Lasat" is listed among the names of fourteen planets provided in-universe by the Lantillian Spacers' Brotherhood's Free-Trader's Guide service as potential destinations for free-traders in the Slice portion of the Outer Rim Territories. The list, which the service erroneously claims contains thirteen entries, also names three planets—Kirdo III, "Lasat," and "Ossell II"[6] (a misspelling of the planet Ossel II)[10]—whose respective star systems the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed in regions other than the Slice, with the Lasan system being placed in grid square P-20, Rimward of the Trailing Sectors.[7]

Given the aforementioned information, as well as the fact that the Free-Trader's Guide issues an in-universe warning about the potential inaccuracy of the information it provides, this article assumes the inconsistencies regarding information on Lasan between "A Free-Trader's Guide to the Planets" and other sources arise due to erroneous in-universe information presented by the Free-Trader's Guide.[6]
