A lifeboat was a small escape vehicle similar to an escape pod carried by larger spaceships. Unlike escape pods, lifeboats had some independent methods of propulsion, though they were not hyperspace-capable or equipped with much sensor equipment. They did, however, feature a communications beacon.

The escape pods carried by the Millennium Falcon included a two-person lifeboat which Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo took to the surface of Skye.
