The Lothal Jedi Temple on the planet Lothal was an ancient building established and maintained by the Jedi Order prior to the execution of Order 66. It was one of many temples throughout the galaxy, and one of the few that were not destroyed by the Galactic Empire. It was a place where Jedi Masters would take their Padawans to determine their readiness to become a Jedi. Kanan Jarrus brought his Padawan, Ezra Bridger, to the temple several years before the Battle of Yavin as well as bringing Ahsoka Tano at one time.[1]

This Jedi Temple had a hidden entrance, which could only be revealed by both a master and apprentice working together using the Force to lift the exposed portion. This would rise in a corkscrew, counter-clockwise motion. If one of the pair lost focus, the outer building would sink back down into the ground.[1] The temple also had a lower section, accessible through a second door underneath the first one. Etched outside on the temple grounds were ancient symbols of the light side and dark sides of the Force.[3]

Once inside, the apprentice must continue on alone, cut off from the master waiting at the entrance area. Should the apprentice fail the tests and never return, the master would remain trapped inside the temple forever, unable to raise up the building alone. Thus, masters that brought their Padawans to take the tests would put their own lives into their student's hands.[1] The Force itself would manifest within the Temple in the form of intense visions in order to test those who entered. In Ezra's case, it manifested itself as the bones of long-dead Jedi.[4] During both their visits to the temple, both Kanan and Ezra also experienced visions of Coruscant's Jedi Temple dojo and it's guards. It could also be an amplifier for the Jedi present there to commune with other Jedi, as was the case when Kanan and Ezra were able to commune with Master Yoda.[5]

While the Temple was only accessible to Jedi, Dark Siders like the Inquisitors could also forcibly open it with their dark side powers but damaging the temple at the same time. It also required great effort on their part, as they were visibly shown to be struggling to get it open.[5]

The Lothal Jedi Temple predated the establishment of the Galactic Empire. About four years before the Battle of Yavin, Ezra Bridger and his master Kanan Jarrus visited the temple to complete Ezra's Jedi training. While Kanan waited outside, Ezra entered the Temple and experienced three different trials involving Force visions of the Grand Inquisitor killing Kanan and the other Spectres. After passing these trials, Ezra encountered Jedi Master Yoda, who remained invisible. After questioning Bridger about his motivations for becoming a Jedi, Yoda gave the young apprentice a kyber crystal which he used to build his lightsaber.[1]

A year later, Ezra and Kanan along with the former Jedi Padawan and Clone Wars veteran Ahsoka Tano visited the Jedi Temple to seek Master Yoda's counsel on the threat posed by the Inquisitors. While Ezra spoke with the now-visible Yoda, Kanan underwent his Jedi Trials at the hands of a Force vision of several Jedi Temple Guards and emerged as a Jedi Knight. Meanwhile, Ahsoka experienced a Force vision of her former master Anakin Skywalker and learned that he had become Darth Vader. Shortly thereafter, the two Inquisitors known as the Fifth Brother and the Seventh Sister breached the temple but were held back by spectral visions of the Temple Guards including the Grand Inquisitor, who had once been a Jedi Knight. Ezra, Kanan, and Ahsoka managed to escape with Chopper on the Phantom into space. Soon after that, Imperial forces led by Darth Vader arrived and secured the temple.[5]

Behind the scenesEdit

The Lothal Jedi Temple first appeared in the "Path of the Jedi" episode of the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

The ancient script inside was based off writing seen in concept art by Ralph McQuarrie in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe.[3]
