Luke's Fate is a paperback children's book by Jim Thomas with illustrations by Isidre Mones. It is part of Random House's Step into Reading series and is a Step 3 Book, intended for kids in grades 2 to 3. The book tells a story of Luke Skywalker, recounting events from the episode "A Wind To Shake The Stars" of the Star Wars radio drama and the first part of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

Publisher's summary[]

Luke Skywalker wants to be a starpilot. But his uncle needs him to help on the farm. Then one day two droids show up. One of them carries a secret message. Now Luke's life is about to take off…

Plot summary[]

Windy visits Luke on the Lars homestead where the young boy is daydreaming while listening to a tape of the Imperial Space Academy. Together they take Luke's skyhopper and meet with his others friends at Beggar's Canyon. When Fixer makes fun of Luke and his dreams, Luke challenges Fixer to a race through Beggar's Canyon and threading the needle. Together with Windy he flies his skyhopper through the narrow canyon and beats Fixer by successfully flying through the Stone Needle, though he loses a stabilizer and can only barely avoid crashing into the ground. But now he knows that he was good enough to get into the academy.

In the evening he tries to talk to uncle Owen about the academy, but the old man refuses to let him go. The next day the Jawas arrive in a sandcrawler and Owen purchases a pair of droids that would change the young boys life forever. After discovering the disappearance of the astromech R2-D2, Luke and C-3PO head into the desert where they are attacked by Tusken Raiders and rescued by old Ben Kenobi. From Ben he learns that his father was once a Jedi, and that it will also be his destiny to become a Jedi under the guidance of Kenobi.

Continuity[]

Luke's Fate makes a few simplifications to the canonical story to keep its length down for its intended reading level.

In the canonical story, R2-D2 runs away from the Lars homestead in the evening, and Luke has to wait until morning to go after him. Here, R2-D2 leaves during breakfast, and Luke and C-3PO give chase soon after Luke discovers the disappearance.

Luke does not find out about the death of his aunt and uncle in this book; instead, he decides to accompany Obi-Wan to Alderaan while still in Obi-Wan's hut, soon after viewing the full holographic message from Leia.

This story also contains some breaks with canon that seem to serve no purpose.

  • Luke's friend Windy is portrayed as female rather than his usual portrayal as male.
  • The dinner conversation where Owen tells Luke to stay on the farm for one more season occurs before the droids are purchased, rather than after.
  • R2-D2 detects the Sand People approaching from the north, rather than the southeast.

Also, in the text, the author is inconsistent in his pronoun usage for C-3PO and R2-D2, alternately using "it" and "him."
