A lung was a major internal organ. For those organisms which possessed lungs, the organs played a vital role in the breathing and respiration processes. Most species, including Humans, had two lungs, though members of the Bith species had only a single lung, a puncture to which was an eventually fatal, but treatable, injury. The Bith Jedi Ulaha Kore died of injuries she sustained during the disastrous Mission to Myrkr in 27 ABY, the most damaging of which was the puncturing of her single lung.[1] The lungs of the breather Gand subspecies were adapted to breathing only ammonia and could be damaged by oxygen inhalation.[2] Zuckuss, a Gand bounty hunter, suffered lung damage some time during the Galactic Civil War. He was eventually treated onboard the EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate, Redemption, after the Battle of Hoth.[3]
Another scenario involving serious lung damage was the case with Anakin Skywalker, a Human, who, as the Sith Lord Darth Vader, had his lungs seared after he was immolated on Mustafar in 19 BBY, though he managed to survive long enough until his master, Palpatine, came to rescue him soon afterward.
Lung diseases could also occur, such as ascomycetous pneumoconiosis, asthma, Merthian lung infection, and pneumonia. A pair of illegally-cloned lungs could cost 50,000 credits.[4]
