Characteristics

The wingless model's stern.

The ship shared its design with the MC80 Liberty type Star Cruiser, but had no extended wing-sections, thus cutting down on the amount of shield and tractor beam projectors as well as gun batteries. The lightened cruiser countered with an extra thruster at the rear, in place of the ventral main sensor array, that increased its maneuverability.[2]

History

Many of these vessels were used by the Rebel Alliance at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY. They made up the bulk of the heavy warships, along with the winged Liberty model and the MC80 Home One type.[2]

Behind the scenes

According to sources in the Expanded Universe, no two MC80 cruisers appear to be the same. Even so, the Liberty type MC80 class appears to be sub-divisible into at least two sub-classes, based on the designs seen in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The first is the well-known winged type, whose appearance is similar to the Liberty.

The other variant lacks the wings, but has an extra engine and is tentatively labeled the "Reef Home-type" by some fans. ILM workers added wings to this design during the production of the film to pad out the Rebel fleet.[3][4]

Appearances
