"Maerzen just made contact with me. He's found a bunch of evidence and he needs someone to escort him in. I had him land in a remote spot and told him you were on the way."
Captain Dustrunner, to a spacer[2]

Maerzen was a Male individual who lived on Corellia during the Galactic Civil War.

Biography[]

"They killed Maerzen? Oh, this is just too much! It's like they know every move we're going to make before we make it. How do they do it?"
―Captain Dustrunner, to a spacer[2]

Maerzen was a member of the Corellian Security Force. After the Battle of Yavin, he was involved in a CorSec investigation against the Hutt crime lord Borvo.[2] In 1 ABY,[1] the CorSec investigation against Borvo the Hutt came to an end when a spacer working for Borvo murdered the infiltrated CorSec agent Niksel Frangee. As nobody in the CorSec knew how Frangee looked like at the moment of his death, the spacer used Frangee's CorSec badge to pass himself off as Frangee on Corellia.[3] Maerzen was going to present the evidence against Borvo to be used in the trial but CorSec Captain Thale Dustrunner gave his location to Borvo's spy. Maerzen was killed in the Riverlands by the spacer who wanted to make sure the evidence never reached the CorSec. The spacer retrieved the evidence, including confiscated money, and brought it back to Borvo the Hutt on Naboo.[2]

Possible depictions of Maerzen

Maerzen appeared as a non-player character in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[2] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[4] Because Maerzen spawned under the generic "borvo_maerzen" template, his appearance was randomized under one of thirty-five possible depictions. However, quest dialogues identified him as male.[2]

Maerzen was present in the original release of the game, being part of Borvo the Hutt's questline.[5] With the release of the "Publish 25," a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005,[6] Borvo the Hutt's questline was revamped. While the gameplay of the questline was extensively upgraded, the storyline remained similar. Players had to kill Maerzen in a quest where they were working for Borvo the Hutt.[3]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
