Malsarr was a mineral. It was found suspended in the seas of Stroiketcy and it was assumed that malsarr ore deposits would be found in the bedrock below the seas if enough of the water turned into ice during the middle point of Stroiketcy's orbit, lowering the sea level enough to reveal small islands of dry land.
