The Max Rebo Band was a 12-member band[1] that played during the Imperial Era. The group was originally composed of the Ortolan Max Rebo, who starred on the red ball jett organ, Sy Snootles, the Pa'lowick who served as the lead vocalislt, and Droopy McCool, who played the chindinkalu flute.[4] At one point, the group was hired by Jabba the Hutt to stay at his palace on the planet Tatooine. Their number would eventually grow, adding drummers such as Ak-rev[5] and Umpass-stay,[6] and vocalists such as Joh Yowza. One of their greatest hits, "Lapti Nek," was one of Jabba's favorites.[4]

Around four years after the Battle of Yavin, the band played the song "Jedi Rocks" for the Hutt and his court, which Jabba demanded be played again.[1] During the second performance, however, Jabba interrupted the band by dropping his slave dancer Oola into the rancor pit below his throne room, where she was devoured. The band was shocked to witness this, and also a bit annoyed about being interrupted. The band then witnessed Leia Organa enter the palace disguised as the bounty hunter Boushh and claim the bounty on the Wookiee Chewbacca. When Organa later freed the smuggler Han Solo from carbonite, several members of the band were present with Jabba in hiding.[3] The band then traveled on board Jabba's sail barge to the Great Pit of Carkoon, surviving the explosion and breaking up afterward.[7]
