Metellos was the fourth of seven planets in the Metellos system, in the Coruscant sector of the Core Worlds region. The planet orbited one star, also called Metellos, and in turn was orbited by three moons.
Description
Metellos had an extremely high population of roughly 900 billion, and was a large producer of energy. It had a diameter of 12,600 km and three moons. Metellos contained seventeen immense stratablocks, which rose far above the surrounding land. Large tracts of shabby, toxic, extremely poor regions, as well as heavy industrial areas, lay between these stratablocks. To compensate for the overcrowding, over 1,000 floating cities were created for the rich. These cities were designed to resemble the magnificent floating cities of Ithor, though the design was considered by many to be blocky and ugly.
History
Known as the "Coruscant that wasn't", Metellos was colonized by Coruscant with sleeper ships before the formation of the Galactic Republic. Over many millennia, Metellos became extremely crowded, more so than Coruscant (despite it having a much smaller population), with much of the planet not urbanized. Large septic seas and barren deserts had not yet been overrun by durasteel. In 20,000 BBY the population of Metellos tried to establish a hyperlane called the Metellos Trade Route, in order to reduce the planet's problems, resulting in only minor success in trading with Coruscant.
This may have resulted in the creation of the seventeen stratablocks above the ground, as well as the thousand decaying floating cities in the upper atmosphere, for the rich, to reduce the overpopulation of the planet.
For thousands of years, Metellos had labored in the shadow of its flashier, glitzier, wealthier neighbor Coruscant in the Galactic Core, while the residents of Metellos struggled to make themselves known. Long after Coruscant had become a Galactic hub, a planet in the Deep Core, Koros Major in 5000 BBY began to overshadow Metellos.
In 10 ABY, as part of the buildup to Operation Shadow Hand, Imperial forces led by Admiral Sander Delvardus engaged a large New Republic force near Metellos, and rained destruction onto the planet in the Battle of Metellos. Large areas were devastated, and approximately 5 billion people were killed. This could have helped reduce the overpopulation of the planet.[5]
