A micropole was a device fastened to the exterior hull of a starship. Several were generally used at once, depending on the size of the vessel. The micropoles would strengthen the effective density of the ship's defenses and cover the spots where the fields did not overlap properly. Unfortunately, there was a correlative increase in the energy they extracted from the ship's power core.
