The mission to the Red Nebula was orchestrated by Domina Tagge, whose spies had learned that a pair of Great Life Jewels were located on a planet in the Red Nebula, and that, should they be separated, they would instigate an outbreak of the Crimson Forever plague. Tagge seized the chance to spread plague on the galaxy in the hopes of killing Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, whom she blamed for the death of her brother, Orman Tagge.^[4]

Tagge hired several bounty hunters, including Bossk, Dengar, IG-88C, IG-88D, and Zuckuss to man her Mining Explorer to the temple that housed the gems. There, her ship bombarded the Untouched Valley, destroying the temple. Her henchmen then gathered the Great Life Gems from the rubble.^[4]
