- "If you don't want the oversized monong, I'll jettison here, let you explain to your superiors why the Empire has one less slave."
- ―Hera Syndulla
Monongs were hairy creatures. While pretending to be involved in slavery in hopes of boarding an Imperial Gozanti-class cruiser, Hera Syndulla once compared a Wookiee to an "oversized monong."[1]
While training a group of rookie Imperial cadets, Lieutenant Currahee referred to them as "flea-bitten monongs."[2]
Behind the scenes
Monongs were first mentioned in Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, the one-hour series premiere for the animated television series Star Wars Rebels.[1] In the first draft of the movie's script, Syndulla used the term "ape." This was later changed to momong,[3] a monkey-like creature native to Wasskah that was first seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.[4] In the final version of the script, "momong" evolved into "monong," thus creating a new species.[3]
