[edit] Biography
[edit] Serving the Republic
- "I was bred to be part of one of the clone trooper commando squadrons, elite four man teams causing disruption behind enemy lines."
- ―Mort[src]
Like so many of his kind, Mort was bred for a specific military purpose. Mort was bred as a clone commando to be part of a special four-man squad and was often sent on missions behind enemy lines.
On a mission to Kashyyyk, Mort and his squad were sent to blow up an enemy bunker. At first, the mission went well. They successfully blew up the bunker, but on the way to their pick-up point, they fell under attack. They notified their commander, Morkov, that they were under attack, but that they would still be able to make it back to the rendezvous point in time.
[edit] Stranded on Kashyyyk
- "But our commander saw us as expendable clones and would rather lose us than risk a carrier."
- ―Mort[src]
Having dispatched the enemies, Mort and his team made it back to the pick-up point, only to see their LAAT/i take off, leaving them stranded on the arboreal planet. It was then Mort realized that clone troopers were considered expendable and that the lives of four clones were apparently worth less than a troop carrier.
The clones tried to find their way back to the Republic forces, but within a matter of weeks, all of them except Mort had died, falling victims to enemies and the harsh nature of Kashyyyk.
[edit] Lab animal
- "No, as I was laying there, bleeding to death, a research expedition happened upon me. They saved my life but had ulterior motives."
- ―Mort[src]
Mort survived in the jungle for months, maybe years, until one day he lost his arm in a fight over food with one of Kashyyyk's predators. Mort emerged victorious, only to nearly bleed to death due to his serious wound.
However, he was found by a research team lead by Doctor Ortoz. Mort's life had been saved, but at a cost. Ortoz decided to conduct a series of gruesome experiments on the clone, whom Ortoz saw as no more than a lab animal. Eventually, Mort gained strength enough to sneak aboard a freighter and made his way to Dearic on Talus, where he would frequent the local cantina and drown his horrible memories in alcoholic beverages.
A washed out soldier, Mort only had one thing on his mind—whenever he was sober enough to think—and that was to avenge his lost brothers.
[edit] Revenge
- Spacer: "I thought clones didn't have feelings?"
- Mort: "So did our commanders, but let me tell you kid, I felt pain so strong that it could have been my own as my brothers fell."
- ―An unknown spacer and Mort[src]
Mort hated Morkov for what he had done and more than anything wanted to see Morkov dead. He once tried to track down Morkov and kill him, but learned that Morkov had risen to a high rank within the Galactic Empire, and so he gave up avenging his commando team.
However, one day he met an individual who showed interest in Mort's life story. The individual sympathized with Mort and agreed to help him get revenge over Morkov. The individual first was able to confirm rumors that Morkov was now an illegal arms dealer, and then agreed to kill him. As a reward to this individual, Mort gave away a set of his Katarn armor.
[edit] Relations with the Empire
- "If the Empire found out I was alive, well let's just say I wouldn't stay that way."
- ―Mort[src]
Because Mort and his team were lost on Kashyyyk and presumed dead, Mort was not turned into a stormtrooper after Palpatine's execution of Order 66. The Empire was probably oblivious of Mort's existence. This was what Mort himself suspected, also fearing that the Empire would probably end his life if they learned that he had survived the Kashyyyk incident.
[edit] Cybernetic implants
- "See this arm? Well it's not the only thing that's not flesh in my body. I would have been better off dying with the rest of them though…"
- ―Mort[src]
Mort had a cybernetic left arm, and other unknown cybernetic replacements to keep himself alive. The cybernetic arm replaced the one he lost to a predator on Kashyyyk. The other cybernetic replacements may have been meant to supplement some of the organs that were probably lost while he was a soldier or others removed from his body as part of Ortoz's experiments. Mort hated the cybernetics, and said he would have been better off dying.
[edit] Behind the scenes
Mort is a so-called non-player character (NPC) in the game Star Wars Galaxies, whom the player has to talk to in order to receive a quest. When the player first converses with Mort, he will recount his story to the player.
He was added to the game with the second expansion, Rage of the Wookiees, in 2005. His quests are part of the Clone Relics quest series which was used by the game designers to incorporate elements from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith' (Katarn armor, ARC-170 starfighter, etc.) and possibly Star Wars: Republic Commando into the game.
There is speculation that Mort is actually Sev from 'Star Wars: Republic Commando' due to the similarities in their stories. Due to the fact that Sev was MIA when Delta Squad had to pull out, there could be a possibility that they ran into one another.
